About Toni

Hello,

My name is Toni S. and I am a former teacher with over 25 years experience. I am available to tutor a variety of subjects - Biology including AP Biology, Physiology, introductory high school Chemistry, general science, all grade levels of English, particularly reading comprehension, and elementary and middle school math.

I graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City where I earned my BA with a major in Zoology and a minor in English. I also earned a Masters in science teaching from Hunter College, City University of New York and was licensed to teach Biology, Chemistry and general science. I worked at several private schools and for the longest period, over 20 years, at Riverdale Country School, a prep school in the Bronx where I taught high school Biology and Chemistry including honors Biology courses and some middle school general science. I helped to plan curriculum there and served for a period as acting Science Department head.

I began tutoring when I moved to California in 2011 and have worked one on one with a variety of students in a range of subjects including Biology and AP Biology, introductory Chemistry, reading comprehension and elementary and middle school math. I also worked in the LAUSD, No Child Left Behind, "Learning with Laptops" program teaching math and english to students from 5th to 9th grade and in the Los Angeles Public Library adult literacy program.

In addition to my particular interest, Biology, I am an avid reader and have particularly enjoyed helping students with their reading comprehension. When I work with students in any subject my goal is for them to enjoy what they are doing as well as to understand the material. The aim is not just to teach memorization or prepping for tests. I try to work with each student in a style that suits his or her individual needs.

I would love to help you and look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I graduated Barnard College with a BA in Zoology and Hunter College, City University of New York with an MA in science teaching. I was licensed in New York City to teach Biology, Chemistry and general science, then taught these subjects for over 25 years. I have been tutoring since moving to California in 2011. I am knowledgeable and comfortable teaching any course material in the Biological sciences including introductory courses, AP courses and Physiology.

Chemistry

I graduated Barnard College, Columbia University with a BA in Zoology. As I was a pre-med at the time I took three years of Chemistry toward that major. I also have a Masters degree in science teaching from Hunter College, City University of New York. I taught for over 25 years in New York City prep schools including, for the longest period, Riverdale Country School where, in addition to teaching Biology, Chemistry and general science, I helped plan science curriculum and served temporarily as Science department head. I have been tutoring since moving to California in 2011.

Elementary Math

I tutored Math and English in the LAUSD "Learning with Laptops" program where I worked with students in grades 5 through 9 and have also tutored several students one on one in these subjects.

I was a licensed teacher in New York and worked for many years teaching Biology and Chemistry at several prep schools. I moved to California in 2011 and have been tutoring privately since then.

English

I have a B.A. from Barnard College, where I majored in science but also minored in English, and an M.A. in education. I was a licensed teacher in New York for many years and then a real estate broker. In both of these capacities I used my English skills extensively.

I have been tutoring since moving to Los Angeles in 2011 and have gained experience working with students of various ages to help them improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. This experience has included working with adults in an adult literacy program run by the Los Angeles public library and elementary and middle school students in the LAUSD "Learning with Laptops" program as well as my private one on one work with students from elementary school age to high school.

I am an avid reader and reading has always been one of my favorite leisure time activities and my main source of learning.

Phonics

I have no formal training in phonics but am currently tutoring a first grade student in reading. She did not read English when she arrived in her class mid year because she came from overseas. While fluent in spoken English she had only read in a different alphabet. I have been using phonics with her quite successfully. I also am very well read, speak well, write well, and have a very strong vocabulary; all skills which I think involve an understanding of phonics.

Prealgebra

I graduated Barnard College, Columbia University where I majored in Zoology and minored in English. I also have a Masters degree in science education. My math background was sufficient to do this.

I have worked as a tutor in an LAUSD program called "Learning with Laptops" where I taught English and math to students in grades 5 through 8, which includes prealgebra, and I have tutored math privately to several students in this age group.

Reading

I graduated from Barnard College where I majored in Science with a minor in English and Hunter College, City University of New York with a Master's degree in teaching. I was a licensed teacher in New York City and taught there for over 25 years. In addition, I have years of experience as a Real Estate broker where my expertise in the use of the English language was very important.

I began tutoring when I moved to Los Angeles in 2011 and have worked with quite a large number of elementary and middle school children who needed help with math and English, particularly reading comprehension. In addition my tutoring experience includes work for the LAUSD "Learning with Laptops" program tutoring these age groups and with adults in reading and English conversation as a volunteer in the adult literacy program run by the Los Angeles Public Library.

Study Skills

My qualifications include my own success earning a BA from a top college, Barnard, Columbia University; and an MA from Hunter Collge, CUNY while also teaching, running a household and raising two children. Study skills were involved along with organizational skill. Teaching for over 25 years also involved helping my students organize their work.

Zoology

Biology at the time I did my undergraduate work was divided into separate departments of Zoology and Botany, it was not taught as a single major as it is now. I was a pre-med student so majored in Zoology with an emphasis on Vertebrate on study of Vertebrates.

I earned an MA in teaching Science from Hunter College and was licensed in New York State to teach Biology, Chemistry, and General Science. I then taught these subjects for over 25 years. Most of this experience was teaching Biology, both introductory and AP courses, and these courses included Zoology.

Patient tutor

My daughter feels comfortable asking questions, she's usually uncomfortable with asking with other tutors. Toni provides clear explanations. She is helping increase my daughter's confidence with AP Bio.
