About Jessica

I make learning fun!

With over 20 years of tutoring experience and a genuine passion for education, I take the time to get to know my students so that I can tailor every lesson to their individual needs. My enthusiasm is contagious, and I create a learning environment that is both enjoyable and rewarding.

I began formal tutoring in high school. I visited a local elementary school and helped the students with their homework and conducted exercises that assisted in the development of vocabulary, reading and basic math skills. When I graduated from college, I worked for a local agency before finally branching out as an independent tutor.

I have taught students of all ages (K-Adult), including those with disabilities such as Dyslexia and ADD; I even tutored a high school sophomore who was blind in one eye. In addition to subject-specific instruction (I specialize in Mathematics and English), I have worked comprehensively with students on their overall academic performance -including but not limited to - organization, study skills, time management, etc. and correspond with both parents and teachers to measure and track success. In the past few years, I have branched out into homeschooling, as this is becoming an increasingly popular choice for parents.

Please contact me for more information on how I can help you or your child achieve your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I began tutoring Algebra 1 to my peers when I took the course myself in the seventh grade; I was even granted the privilege of teaching the class for a day! I am able to break down the concepts in a way that makes them easier for students to understand, while having a little fun in the process. While I teach Math from elementary through Algebra 2, approximately 20% of my students every year are Algebra 1. Mastery of Algebra 1 is essential for success in subsequent Math courses, so I ensure that all of my students have solid comprehension in this subject.

Algebra 2

I began tutoring Algebra 2 to my peers in high school while taking the course myself. I have a demonstrated history of successfully taking students who struggle with Math in general through Algebra 2 successfully - I had one such student last year who received a 100% in the entire class! I have even helped college-level Algebra 2 students taking the course online (with no instructor) and nursing students working through their RN program. My students always achieve high marks!

Elementary (K-6th)

I began working with elementary school students when I was in eleventh grade; leading an after school program where my colleagues and I tutored students at a neighboring school with their Reading (verbal skills, vocabulary, comprehension) and Math.

At any given time, 30-40% of my students are K-6. I have worked with students as young as 4, including children with disabilities (ADD, dyslexia, poor vision, anxiety, autism) in all of the following elementary subjects:

- Reading (Phonics)
- Language (Vocabulary, Grammar, Writing, Spelling)
- Science
- Study Skills (Organization, Time Management, Test Preparation)
- Math

I create a safe and fun learning environment where students are able to overcome obstacles to achieve their fullest potential.

English

I have been helping people with their English skills since high school, when I conducted both peer and elementary school tutoring with Key Club International. I have worked with students as young as 4 all the way up to adult level ESL on a diverse range of English skills:

- Verbal
- Phonics
- Vocabulary
- Spelling
- Grammar
- Reading Comprehension
- Writing (Structure, Format, Organization, Analysis)

Geometry

I began tutoring Geometry to my peers when I took the course myself. I am able to break down the concepts in a way that makes them easier for students to understand, while overcoming the primary obstacle in Geometry - which is mastering Geometric Proofs. Last year, I had five Geometry students - ranging from a 7th grade student in an experimental class, to a high school Honors Geometry student, and even one who took an online course with no teacher. With the proper guidance and instruction, of my students ultimately achieve success in Geometry to their fullest potential.

Literature

I have been helping people with their English skills since high school, when I conducted both peer and elementary school tutoring with Key Club International. I have worked extensively with students struggling to comprehend old classics from the literary canon and partnered with them in developing their related analytical and writing skills. I have given primary instruction at the high school level in conjunction with accredited homeschool program curricula. I have also collaborated virtually with college students in other states to strengthen their academic papers.

Prealgebra

I began tutoring Algebra to my peers when I took the course myself in the seventh grade; I was even granted the privilege of teaching the class for a day! I am able to break down the concepts in a way that makes them easier for students to understand, while having a little fun in the process. Reading

I began working with elementary school students when I was in eleventh grade; leading an after school program where my colleagues and I tutored students at a neighboring school with their Reading (verbal skills, vocabulary, comprehension).

I have worked with students as young as 4, including children with disabilities (ADD, dyslexia, poor vision, anxiety, autism) and assisted Kindergarteners achieve the required levels of mastery to move up to first grade. I have helped older students who have fallen behind catch up (and even sometimes jump ahead of) their grade level.

Writing

I have been helping people with their writing skills since high school, when I conducted both peer and elementary school tutoring with Key Club International. I was the go-to person among my colleagues at UCSD for academic paper editing and assistance. I have worked extensively with students from Kindergarten through college on developing writing skills through:

- vocabulary
- grammar
- structure/format
- organization
- verb tense consistency
- active voice
- effective analysis/commentary
