About Jessica

I make learning fun!

With over 20 years of tutoring experience and a genuine passion for education, I take the time to get to know my students so that I can tailor every lesson to their individual needs. My enthusiasm is contagious, and I create a learning environment that is both enjoyable and rewarding.

I began formal tutoring in high school. I visited a local elementary school and helped the students with their homework and conducted exercises that assisted in the development of vocabulary, reading and basic math skills. When I graduated from college, I worked for a local agency before finally branching out as an independent tutor.

I have taught students of all ages (K-Adult), including those with disabilities such as Dyslexia and ADD; I even tutored a high school sophomore who was blind in one eye. In addition to subject-specific instruction (I specialize in Mathematics and English), I have worked comprehensively with students on their overall academic performance -including but not limited to - organization, study skills, time management, etc. and correspond with both parents and teachers to measure and track success. In the past few years, I have branched out into homeschooling, as this is becoming an increasingly popular choice for parents.

Please contact me for more information on how I can help you or your child achieve your goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I began tutoring Algebra 1 to my peers when I took the course myself in the seventh grade. It remains one of my favorite math courses and approximately 20% of my tutoring experience is in this subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I began working with elementary school students when I was in eleventh grade. I participated in an after school program where my colleagues and I helped students at a neighboring school with their reading (reading aloud, vocabulary, comprehension, etc).

After graduating college, I began to teach 20 hours/week in people's homes as my second job. At any given time, 30-40% of my students were K-6. I have taught all of the following elementary subjects:

- Reading
- Language (Vocabulary, Grammar, Writing)
- Science
- Study Skills (Organization, Time Management, Test Preparation)

The Real Deal — Jessica has only worked with my daughter for one session thus far, specifically on geometry. She was, in a word, great. If the objective of tutoring is to strengthen a child's ability in a subject, increase their confidence and ability to self-learn, and bring a sense of fun to math -- check, check, check. How she does on upcoming tests and overall in the subject is still to be determined, but ...
