I am an Ivy League university graduate, university lecturer, and academic tutor. With over a decade of experience tutoring and teaching hundreds of students, I specialize in tailoring lessons to the individual needs of each student. I am kind, patient, encouraging, and truly care about the success of my students. Having received an A in AP Calculus (while attending Cleveland Humanities Magnet HS), I can understand your Math coursework and explain it to you effectively.

I have worked for various SAT tutoring companies, read many SAT guide books, learned lots of tricks, and developed many new expert strategies of my own! Here are my scores: Writing-800/800 (99%-ile), Reading 800/800 (99%-ile), Math-780/800 (99%-ile) -- Composite: 2380/2400 (99%-ile). I can help you score higher on the Writing, Reading, and Math sections of the SAT! In addition, I have 99th %-ile score on the ACT: English 36/36 (100%-ile), Math 35/36 (99%-ile), Reading 34/36 (98%-ile), Science 31 (95%-ile), Composite: 34/36 (99%-ile). Studying for the ACT/SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL ACT/SAT questions. In order to score high, you need to get into the minds of the test makers.

I just focus on the areas in which you are struggling (or need review) and give you detailed, thorough explanations. Since you are my only student, I have the time to answer your individual questions, rather than having to move on to the next topic quickly. We can decide to skip over questions that are easy for you and focus on ones that are giving you problems.

MY PHILOSOPHY: Individualized attention - as with all of my lessons, I continually adapt my instruction and materials to a student's particular needs, goals, and skill-set. I use my teaching experience and creative problem-solving abilities to tailor lessons to improve and reinforce students' weak spots. You won't find that in a mass-marketed, cookie-cutter class!

In addition to my experience as a professor, I also enjoy working with

Thai,

Thai

I am a second-generation Thai-American who was raised by Thai-born immigrants. In addition, I went to Thai language and cultural school at Wat Thai of Los Angeles when I was in elementary school. While studying at UCLA, I took Thai courses to the completion of the Intermediate level and went on to complete the 8-week Advanced Study of Thai (AST) program at the University of Chiang Mai in Thailand. I have over 8 years of experience teaching conversational and literacy skills (from the Beginning to Intermediate levels) to both Thai-heritage and non-Thai-heritage students. My strength is that I can explain aspects of the language clearly in English, using my personal experience of having studied Thai, Spanish, French, and Intro to Linguistics at the university level.

Phonics,

Phonics

Phonics is a passion of mine because I know that it is a key component to becoming an independent reader. Growing up bilingual, speaking both English and Thai, I learned two different writing systems with different sounds and how they are written. I have also taken "Intro to Linguistics" and "The History of the English Language" courses at Columbia University, which went extensively over phonetics, or the study of sounds. More recently, I have also tutored my nieces (ages 6 and 8) in phonics and reading comprehension, using the "Hooked on Phonics" workbooks. It's a lot of fun for all of us and I saw them gain reading skills, one sound at a time. Also, as a literacy and ESL tutor/teacher, I have taught adults how to recognize and read the sounds of the English language as well.

I have an MA in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and a BA from UCLA. In addition, I taught College Writing courses at Cal State Northridge (CSUN) for 8 semesters. SAT Reading

Studying for the SAT is just like preparing for any sport: it requires drills and practice, practice, practice with REAL SAT questions and coaching from someone like me, who can explain how/why the SAT test-makers decide which answers are right or wrong. This is the SAT section that many students fear the most--because there is so much reading! Well, I'm here to tell you that you can break up the reading section into bite-sized chunks and get more points in less time. I will show you why the correct answer choices are not just "random," but exact. On top of that, I will teach you how to answer the sentence completion questions, even if you don't know all of the vocabulary words! I received a 770/800 (99th-percentile) on the Reading Section, with an updated score coming soon. Let me help you understand and score higher on the Critical Reading Section of the SAT!

What students often find difficult about Algebra is that it moves beyond numbers to symbols (called variables). I can help you understand what they mean and how they interact with other numbers, as well as the different laws, like the Distributive Law and Associative Law. Contact me and I can help demystify Algebra 1 for you once and for all!

Geometry is all about shapes and lines. I think that what students find hard about it are all of the laws (theorems and postulates). But once you understand them, they become like second nature and you see how clues logically lead to conclusions!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Having passed AP Calculus AB with an A, I am quite comfortable explaining the ins and outs of pre-calculus. As an SAT and ACT expert as well, I have discovered many methods to tackle complex concepts in a direct and elegantly simple way, often using drawings or diagrams. In addition, I have a Masters Degree in English and Comparative Literature from an Ivy League university, so I am able to use my finesse with language to explain tricky concepts clearly and concisely. Finally, not only do I enjoy math, but I also enjoy teaching. I have the patience to guide you through the process (sometimes with more than one method) because I too remember what it felt like to learn these concepts for the first time.

Honored to recommend Lalita S.

Lalita is a top notch tutor. She is very patient and really takes her time explaining things. She helped my son prepare for the SAT and each time he took a practice text, his scores kept increasing. Lalita really got to know my son and tailored each sessions to focus on his particular weaknesses. She was always reliable and on time and is immensely knowledgeable in all areas of the SAT. She also helped him sharpen his test taking techniques and worked patiently with him all the time. I highly recommend Lalita, she was a life saver for us. Thank you Lalita.
