Hi I'm Jill! I have had more than 7 years of tutoring experience in addition to 6 years of teaching at the college and university level and I'm excited to work with you in a variety of subjects. I love explaining how math and science concepts work to a student and helping them understand the world around them. I also really enjoy test preparation tutoring and will help you learn the best way of cracking the test!
In addition to my extensive tutoring experience, I am a full-time faculty at a local community college.
I have a Master's degree in geology from Arizona State University (I lived in Arizona for 9 years before moving here in 2014) and a Bachelor's degree in both biology and geology from the University of Western Ontario. My tutoring experience is very diversified, and includes science, math, test preparation, and English. I am also very comfortable tutoring AP Environmental Science (not listed on the list of possible subjects!) My educational background has given me excellent language and grammar skills, as well as a strong foundation in math and science. I love being able to help a student understand a subject with which they have previously struggled. I have tutored students in most math and science courses, and I am comfortable with all grade levels, from elementary school to college. If you're curious about test scores, I received a 1490 (out of 1600) on the SAT 1, 760 on the SAT II Biology, and a 800 on both the SAT II Math and Writing subject tests.
I have also spent some time looking over the new SAT format and feel quite comfortable with the material. It is a different style of test than in previous years, but I'm excited to tutor it. Please note that due to the time I have spent going over the new test, I will be charging an increased hourly rate for SAT prep.
My teaching style varies according to the individual needs of the student. My main goal is to help the student become enthusiastic about the specific subject or activity, and confident in their ability to interpret what a question is actually asking. I am very flexible, and will tailor the curriculum and evaluation methods based on discussions with the student. If desired by either the student and/or parent, I can provide additional practice resources to help strengthen concepts covered in our tutoring sessions. Whenever possible, I am available to my students via email, text, or Skype if they have a problem with their homework that I can guide them through.
I am open to group tutoring sessions, so feel free to ask! If you need last minute help for a test or exam I will do my best to accommodate you, however please be aware that I may charge an increased rate for short-notice scheduling.
I think that tutoring can be a mutual rewarding experience, and I look forward to helping students excel! Hi I'm Jill! I have had more than 7 years of tutoring experience in addition to 6 years of teaching at the college and university level and I'm excited to work with you in a variety of subjects. My son has had many tutors over the years. This is the first time he came home reporting he has learned something... that says a lot to me! Jill obviously knows how to explain the material. She has been very prompt on communication and has gone out of her way to accommodate our tight schedule.
Jill is great. After many patient sessions, my daughter went from hating the AP biology to liking it.
I was able to get Jill to help us at a very short notice. Very timely communication and truly an expert in Chemistry. Always on time, friendly, and ready to help. Thank you!
Jill was dependable, thorough and a very good communicator. She is good for all levels. Would not hesitate to recommend her!
I am not overstating this. My son has A.D.D and I have had other tutors. But, the problem was they didn't care all too much in means of the success of my son. Jill, on the other hand, does an excellent job explaining and reviewing problems in a simple and concise way so that not only can my son learn the basics, but masters the material. In terms of overall grade improvement, my son has risen significantly in just as little as three weeks! I would recommend Jill to any parent who has a child struggling in math specifically algebra.
Jill has been tutoring our son for around 2 months now, and every session has been extremely worthwhile. She is focused, and really helps our son be focused on a methodical approach to pre-calculus. She is also very encouraging to him and helps him get in a good mind-set to perform well on tests.
My High School son is struggling with Algebra 1. Jill was extremely thorough in going over all of the lessons from the week so he can do each problem. My son gets extracted easily and she kept him moving and interested for 90 minutes teaching him concepts he has not absorbed until now. He asked to have her back and that says it all.
I was messed up in maths until Jill's style of tutoring gave me confidence on all the basic ideas, from the first lesson I knew everything I was supposed to know.
Jill was able to work around my crazy schedule and meet with my son right after school. He felt as though the material was explained well and he is developing a better understanding of the subject.
Jill provided professional one on one tutoring for my daughter with a chemistry test and her final college chemistry exam. Jill went through the semester's work and helped explain what my daughter did not understand and it showed in her improved grades. Thanks so much for providing such great tutoring on such short notice.
Jill and I just finished up our second session today. All I can say is that she is really great. She works well and tried to explain the info in easy to understand manner. Even when I ask those off the wall questions that she doesn't know or doesn't know how to explain she will go out of her way to find out. I was a little apprehensive at first about getting a tutor but after working with Jill definitely not anymore.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Just like the SAT, the ACT is a test that requires a lot of preparation and students tend to be afraid of it. I'll go through each section with them and show them how to handle each type of problem so they are never faced with anything unexpected.
I've taken biology courses in a variety of different topics, ranging from environmental studies to genetics, with even my masters related to the field of geomicrobiology. I love helping students who are struggling understand the major concepts and being to develop an appreciation for the subject.
Chemistry is a subject that many students struggle with, and so I like to go back to the beginning and make sure the fundamentals are strong before progressing to more advanced material. I love showing students an easier way of viewing and doing a problem that they had previously had trouble with!
As my educational background shows, I have both a bachelors and a masters in geology. I am also currently teaching Physical and Historical Geology at a local community college. This is one of favorite subjects to tutor as the majority of students need help in the same course that I'm teaching.
I have been playing the piano since I was 4 years old, and I love this instrument. I was classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, and have passed my Grade 9 level examination. I have a very solid understanding of the musical theory associated with playing an instrument and I am able to incorporate that into my teaching. I have experience in teaching piano and I really enjoy being able to help students grow and learn to explore their musicality.
The SAT is a test that scares a lot of students, and for good reason! I break it down for my students on a section by section basis, and show them which areas to focus on for studying.
I make sure they are familiar with all types of problems and I also show them tricks for handling some of the more difficult problems.
