About Matthew

Although born and raised in California, I've spent the past thirteen years living in Hawaii. I moved there specifically to go through the Teacher Training Grad Program at the University of Hawaii, but fell in love with the Big Island and it became home. When I completed my education, I took a summer position with Sylvan Learning Center and was amazed to discover how deeply fulfilling my tutoring sessions were. I became the Director of Education for Sylvan in Hilo, Hawaii in 2007. In 2010, the Center closed its doors, but I hand-picked my favorite materials and favorite students, and have been providing personal, professional private tutoring ever since.

After so many years on a rock in the middle of the ocean, I began to miss the family, so I moved to Davis to be near most of my loved ones. Fortunately for me, the majority of my students chose to "make the move" with me, and I now have a pretty busy Skype schedule with my Aloha State families. I do miss in person sessions, though, and am looking forward to meeting with local students and families and becoming a part of your path to academic achievement.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored 60+ students in algebra 1, and am familiar with common core teaching techniques.

Prealgebra

I have tutored prealgebra to dozens of students over the last decade, and have developed a very successful style of teaching the subject.

In my lessons, I provide materials to supplement the skills and concepts being taught in the classroom. Each session typically begins with a review of recent homework followed by simple, fun worksheets that reinforce the topics and can help the student break through to a clear understanding and ownership of the concepts.

Prealgebra is one of my favorite classes to teach. It is very rewarding to see and share in my students' success, in what is such an important foundational class for future classes and life skills.

SAT Reading

I have worked with dozens of students over the past nine years in preparing for the SAT. I am very familiar with the new version of the SAT (Mar 2016) and have perfected teaching techniques for students who have several months or just a few days to prepare.

World History

World History was actually my first tutoring experience. While I was attending the class as a student, a classmate approached me and asked if I would tutor her and her friend. They were both from Japan, and having difficulty with the lectures and the text. She explained that she had appreciated my answers to the teacher's questions, and appreciated my questions as well. As I was studying to become a teacher at the time, how could I say no? I began meeting with them twice a week. It was quite the learning experience for me: how to overcome the language barrier and how to reduce complex material into simpler terms that could be well understood and retained by my classmates. This was the foundation for my passion for history and my love of tutoring.
