Study Skills,

Study Skills

I try to help students see a clearer picture of what is being learned. In 39 years as a teacher I have used various methods of improving a students study skills. One important idea is the use of breaking down reading materials into smaller chunks. When taking notes, one method that I have found useful for students is the Cornell method. I also encourage my students to use graphic organizers and diagrams so that they can better picture the subject being learned. I preview with the student what is being learned. I find out with the student what they already know about the subject. I have the student summarize what they have just read by saying or writing it in their own words. I recommend that they review what they learned regularly so that it stays fresh.
