About Sarah

I am a Professional Geologist with a passion for teaching and learning. My field has required me to stay sharp on a variety of subjects, including English and Writing, Math (geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and calculus), and of course, geology and earth sciences. As a licensed California Professional Geologist with nearly eight years’ experience in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology, I have a lot of practical experience to share with students contemplating a career in these, or related fields.

I have previously been employed by Sonoma State University as an instructor in the Geology Department, and taught several semesters/sections of the Geology 102 Laboratory. I regularly participate in local high school career days, science fair judging, and I also present geology labs to local schools.

I have the ability to inspire and excite students about their topics of study... I want to find a way to connect you to what you are learning. There is something applicable to everyday life around us to be found in every subject!

I am happy to always offer a first consultation free of charge, to meet you and see if we're a good fit to create the right environment for you to learn.

A Note for Parents:

As a mother of two, I understand how precious your kids are to you, and your desire for education to pave the way to a bright future. I understand the hope to see kids connect with learning in a way that is fulfilling and leaves them with a hunger for more. My approach is not to "teach", but to create an environment in which the student can learn. (Credit for that concept goes to Monty Roberts, "The Horse Whisperer".)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ecology

I have a strong academic and professional background in soil science, natural history, and biology, which are all key components of "ecology". As a geologist, I have studied the interactions of multiple systems of the natural world. Geologists are at the forefront in the scientific community studying the world's ecosystems, human impacts, paleoclimatology, and global ecological changes throughout geologic time.

English

My mother has always said that my love of reading as a child was instrumental in developing my ability to use English properly, write well, and expand my vocabulary. I think she's right. My constant exposure to the written word as a child has caused me to recognize proper (and improper) use of the different parts of speech and punctuation, as well as sentence construction. I'm sure I also have my mother to thank for taking every opportunity to point out to me the Latin roots of every word she could. I think little tricks like that go a long way in exponentially increasing one's comprehension of the entire language, rather than drilling individual terms or concepts "ad nauseam".

Closely linked to English skills, of course, is proper grammar. Again, thanks to my mom, I learned to diagram sentences as a child and I value those lessons.

My command of the English language has propelled me much farther in my career than I could have managed without the ability to write and communicate effectively. I firmly believe that you will be taken more seriously as a person, an adult, and a professional in any career if you have a built-in radar for proper English and grammar. I'm ready to help you achieve your potential.

Geography

I'm a map person. I've always enjoyed visualizing the spatial distribution of everything from countries to mountain ranges to geologic formations. Geographic information is critical to the study and practice of geology. I have taught mapping and map-reading skills, including topographic and geologic, at the college level. I love creating fun, relatable word problems to get students exploring their maps.

Geology

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Sciences from UCSB, and am a licensed California Professional Geologist. I have taught Introductory Physical Geology laboratories at the college level, and routinely mentor students in engineering geology.

That being said, my mother also taught me to diagram sentences as a child and I do value those traditional lessons.

Physical Science

Physical Science is where we are introduced to the foundation concepts that open the doors to chemistry, physics, earth science, ecology, geology, astronomy, and biology (to name a few of my favorites). It's the nuts and bolts that require a little excitement and some relatable examples to wrap your head around. But taking the time to dig into Physical Science is SO worth it! There's a world full of science experiments out there, happening constantly. Let's explore Physical Science together so that you can identify and understand the miracles that are happening around you every day.
All of the advanced math, chemistry and physics I took in college as part of my geology education built upon my high school physical science classes. Because I paid attention and was curious, I still have a connection to the nuts and bolts of Physical Science and can help you open that door... plus I have an uncontainable enthusiasm about where a scientific mind can take you!

Prealgebra

Prealgebra! Solving little mysteries using cool tricks! Who doesn't want to be better at that?

As a child I remember finding word problems a little daunting at first. Part of me just wanted equations to chug through or a good book to read. Then you grow up and realize that everything is a word problem!! That's when you draw upon the comprehension, analysis, and arithmetic skills that prealgebra is really all about.

I can help you get excited about prealgebra and build a solid foundation in this critical subject. You really want to nail this subject so that you can have all kinds of fun with Algebra (and Calculus!). My strength as a tutor lies in not only having a firm understanding of the mathematics, but also the ability to connect the math to the analysis or question at hand. I can help you take "why are we doing this?" and change it to "this is so useful!"... Dare I say, you might find prealgebra with me to be FUN!
