About Patrick

In the past, I have worked with students of all ages, ranging from elementary school to my peers in college. Whether it is paid or unpaid, I take the task of tutoring very seriously, placing myself in the role of the tutee and imagining how I would like to learn a difficult subject or cement my knowledge in an already strong subject. At Amherst College, schoolwork is difficult and students often need tutoring from their peers, and I am qualified by the college to tutor Music classes from 1st to 4th semester theory, and German from 1st to 6th semester.

I am able to break problems down to their basic foundations, allowing for students to see the logic that goes into solving more complex problems by doing so. For language, this includes helping students to form meaningful connections between structures, words, and meaning. For music, this involves building strong fundamentals in theory, showing that more complex ideas are just derived consequences of simple ideas.

I play french horn, with a goal of becoming a professional musician, in the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, the Amherst College Horn Ensemble, and I take private lessons at Amherst. I have subbed in the local community orchestra, receiving payment for my musical contributions there.

I have taken Counterpoint and Harmony and received an A-, as well as an analysis of tonal harmony course, receiving an A. I am versed in music from the 18th-21st century. Focusing on French Horn performance, I have the discipline and patience to work strenuously through various problems, as well as a natural talent for music. I work at Amherst College as a peer tutor for students in beginner Music classes. Aside from theory, I have backgrounds in Jazz improvisation, Electronic music and improvisation, 20th Century Music history, and in Composition.

Acheiving C1 proficiency in under 2 years, I consider myself a very skilled speaker, reader, and writer. I have read, and written about, many Kafka short stories, including In Der Strafkolonie (In the Penal Colony) and Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor), and longer works such as Die Verwandlung (Metamorphosis) and Das Schloß (The Castle). I attended the Middlebury German School during the summer of 2015 and am returning in the summer of 2016. I am studying abroad at the University of Göttingen in Fall 2016, where I will study German poetry, International Politics, and Music Theory. I love reading German poetry; I just recently purchased a 650 page collection of Rilke poetry, as he is my favorite poet - in both English and German. I am currently reading Haruki Murakami's "Naokos Lächeln," a Japanese novel translated directly to German.

Being young and studying across the country for college, I understand what it takes to overcome the struggles of life to ensure future success. At the end of the day, I want to help people achieve success in their lives. I look forward to working with you! Contact me to schedule lessons, I am very responsive and friendly, and I will answer questions promptly. I work primarily online, but can bike to areas not too far away.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a former math major (I did not have the time to complete a triple major of German, Music, and Math, so sadly, Math was dropped), I definitely have the skill-set to help students with the daunting task of Algebra, and make it seem not so daunting. I break problems down into their basic areas, and then help students work from there, enabling them to then break down other problems in similar ways.

French Horn

I am a music major at Amherst College, #2 ranked in liberal arts colleges in the U.S.A. I have taken counterpoint, tonal harmony and analysis, composition, 20th century history, electronic music performance, and gotten As in all but counterpoint, in which I got an A-. I also take French horn lessons and play with the symphony orchestra, with community orchestras in the Pioneer Valley, and with various chamber ensembles at the school. I am also a music tutor for students in beginning music classes at Amherst.

General Computer

I have been using computers my entire life, and am very handy with devices. I can help explain the logic of certain menu placement and navigation. This helps to avoid the fated confusion when a step is missed in a "foolproof" set of directions.

I have taken counterpoint, tonal harmony and analysis, composition, 20th century history, electronic music performance, and gotten As in all but counterpoint, in which I got an A-. 20th century music is my forte, from Neoclassical movements to minimalism to modern composers.

Music Theory

I have taken Counterpoint and Harmony and received an A-, as well as an analysis of tonal harmony course, receiving an A. I can analyze a piece on the larger scale, with form and motivic analysis, and also on the smaller scale, with harmony and micro-motivic analysis.

Vocabulary

As a bilingual person, vocabulary is very interesting for me, as I can see the logic of words in multiple languages. I love etymology and finding distant connections between seemingly unrelated words. I help students to effectively memorize and utilize vocabulary they learn.
