Hello students & parents! My name is Kris, and I have been tutoring and teaching for twenty years with awesome results and a 100% student return rate. I believe that learning should always be engaging and fun, and math should always make sense! Algebra, geometry, trig, and SAT are my specialties, and I guarantee I can help you bring up your grades. If your test scores don’t go up, I’ll teach it again for free.
So here's my story - I was a math whiz in school (800 Math SAT), studied engineering at UCSD (BSME with honors), worked on rockets for a while (Delta IV launch vehicles), then became a youth pastor because teaching teens is awesome! More recently I created an educational mobile app for daily Bible study (check out Through the Word in the app store). All along I keep tutoring, because I love to help students succeed.
Are you feeling lost in math class - trying to memorize endless rules without understanding why? I can help. I break it down so that you get it. I use object lessons and clear explanation to help you get past your stumbling blocks and get the confidence that comes from real understanding. Already rockin' the math? I'll help you drive ahead to score that scholarship! I got one and I can help you do the same.
I genuinely care for students, I communicate with parents and teachers as needed, and I don't charge extra for homework phone calls. I'm always patient, always encouraging and relatable, and occasionally funny (laughter is a great memory trigger, and studies show that teaching with humor results in higher test scores! Check out my SAT teaching notes for a tip on how to use it to your advantage).
I am new to WyzAnt, so here are a couple reviews from my previous students:
"I had difficulties understanding Algebra and had no hope of passing the class. With Kris tutoring me I was able to grasp the information and pass the class with flying colors. He is patient with his students and very knowledgeable in the subject. He has a way of making you understand the problems and get good grades in the class. He is in fact the best tutor I have ever had!" - Ashlie W., Huntington Beach
"As a former student of Kris in an educational setting as a tutee as well as a church setting as a student, I feel that I can attest to his exceptional teaching abilities. Kris tutored me when I was struggling with algebra, he was able to explain algebra in a way that was clear and easy for me to understand from then on out. Kris really breaks things down to a student's level that he or she can easily understand. Kris is a very patient person who genuinely cares for students." - Chris D., Huntington Beach Hello students & parents! Kris has been a great find! I was desperate for a last minute tutor and found him through WyzAnt via an online search. He is awesome. Very patient, kind and flexible. Not only did my daughter learn what she needed, he gave her a lot of confidence. She went from an F on a quiz Wednesday, emergency tutoring on Thursday and then a 90% on the test on Friday. He is worth every penny. Thanks again Kris!!
Thanks for the review - and thanks for being flexible on a busy schedule! Your family is great, and it is fun to work with a perfectionist. = ]
Kris helped my son prep for the SAT subject test Math 1 & 2. He offered great tips and strategies in test taking and explained with ease complex math problems my son didn't fully comprehend. Kris is also very flexible and easy to work with. Overall, he was a fabulous tutor and I would use Kris again in a heartbeat!
Kris has been a great tutor for both my daughter and her friend. Both were lacking the confidence they needed going into finals week. Kris got right to work and instantly made them feel comfortable, patiently going through each lesson. I saw an instant change in their demeanor. Both girls feel very confident about taking their finals.
Thanks Lisa! The girls were excellent students. Nice work!!
We retained Mr Kris L. to help our 16 yrs old son with Math, English & Science for nearly 3 weeks of intensive daily lessons. Mr L's tutoring was very clear, easy to understand, thorough and most of all, enjoyable. We highly recommend Mr L. to any student, and will certainly engage his help again for our son and his younger brother if there is any need again in the future.
Kris is very patient and is helping my son to fully understand all aspects of Algebra. He seems to be diverse in his teaching methods and adjust to the method that helps the child most. My son looks forward to his tutoring sessions. I highly recommend Kris.
On time, extremely patient and very thorough. Excellent teacher and highly recommended, has improved our daughter's grasp and understanding of math more than we though anyone would.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is my #1 specialty. I have taught Algebra in school and tutored it for twenty years. Whether you are struggling or sailing, I guarantee that your test scores will go up, or I’ll teach it again for free.
Are you feeling lost in class? Algebra is tricky for students because your numbers suddenly turned into letters, and many teachers charge forward with rules that don't make sense to you. I equip students to understand what variables are, why equations work the way they do, and how those equations turn into graphs. I use object lessons like a mystery box for variables and balancing scales for equations. I break down complex concepts and give clear explanations for every step of the way. I want to help you turn your stumbling blocks into building blocks so that you truly grasp algebra and make sense of all those x’s and y’s.
Already rockin’ the math? I’ll help you drive up your test scores to the top. Rather than just memorizing formulas, I can help you understand the foundational principles of numbers, variables and equations. If you want to do something awesome with numbers someday, this is the stuff you need to know! When you get the core issues and understand how equations work and what variables mean, new challenges will come easy, and you’ll be ready to turn that A- into an A+ (and no, you can’t just multiply it by negative one).
Algebra 2 takes a significant step up from the first year, with more complex polynomials, equations, and graphs. Don’t worry, after tutoring it for twenty years, algebra is still my specialty and I can still help you raise that grade.
Algebra 2 builds on all the foundational elements that you learned in Algebra 1, so we’ll make sure you are always solid on the fundamentals. Algebra 2 can also feel like a lot of rules that you have to memorize for how solve an equation or make a graph, but do you ever really understand why those rules work? I’ll help you get a real grasp on why they work and what they mean. When you do have to memorize, I’ll help you with clever (and sometimes silly) memory tools so that they’ll stick to your brain for test time.
Teaching the Bible to students is what I love. I am an ordained pastor with Calvary Chapel, and the creator of the Through the Word mobile app for daily Bible studies. I have taught through 33 books of the Bible, and written and recorded over 100 Bible Audio Guides.
Public speaking can be just as easy as private speaking - it just takes some practice and a little help. I have been teaching speakers and teachers how to communicate effectively with an audience for over ten years. Some of my students have even moved on to a career in teaching and speaking! I'll help you with the fine art of connecting with your audience, delivering your message effectively and clearly, and above all - sharing your heart.
I am a pastor and speaker with more than 1200 public speaking engagements over the last thirteen years. I've also recorded more than 100 audio guides for the Through the Word mobile app, and made repeat appearances as a talk radio guest. Whatever the speaking assignment that you have, I would love to help you make the most of it!
I love teaching the Math SAT! I scored an 800 on mine, and I know that I can help you bring up your score and win that scholarship that you're aiming for.
The key difference that you’ll find with my teaching is a focus on comprehension before memorization. Students get lost when math is presented as a list of rules to memorize without real understanding. This really hits hard when students face the SAT, and all the problems look just a little different from what they saw in class. Same concepts but different wording, and suddenly the “rules” don’t apply the way students are used to. The good news is that the problem can be solved with the right kind of preparation.
There are two skills that are tested by the Math SAT: math and test-taking. In order to teach test-taking skills, I focus first on what I call math-translation. Students learn how to read each problem and translate from “mathematic-ese” into plain English. That translation is a basic skill that doesn’t get much attention in math class. It’s crucial for word problems - and the SAT has lots of word problems. Without math-translation, the SAT may as well be written in Greek.
Once the student translates and understands what the problem is about, I focus on the approach. I teach students a step-by-step method to look at each problem, identify the facts, identify the question, and choose the method to solve it. This method equips students with an approach for every problem, so they never have to feel overwhelmed or stuck. It may seem obvious, but it is a big confidence booster. Other test-taking skills include intelligent guessing and thinking-like-the-test-writers. We’ll go over all of these. You may be amazed to see how much test scores go up before we even focus on the actual math!
Next up is math skills. These are the essentials of course, and practice makes perfect. Raising SAT scores is as much about practice as it is learning new skills. Students can practice on their own time so that we can make the most of tutoring time (saves money too). With the combination of personal practice and clear teaching, students begin to recognize each SAT problem. After all, they use the same mix of problems for every SAT, they just change up the numbers and wording for each one. With practice and help, a well-prepared student can confidently say for each problem, “I’ve seen this one before.”
As we approach each problem, I’ll focus on core skills and understanding. SAT Math questions can feel like a jumble of rules, numbers and concepts from the last several years of classes. I help students get back to a clear understanding of the essentials. We work together to identify their stumbling blocks and clear them out one at a time.
Bonus Tip: Here’s a little test-taking tip I love to share. Long tests are boring, and bored minds get lower scores. Liven up your test-time by reading with a ridiculous British accent. Seriously – it works! Not only will it make the test more fun, you’re reading comprehension will go way up as well – because laughter is a memory trigger. (Now if you're already British, you might want to try something different - say French or Indian. That should work. And if you get in trouble for laughing out loud, you might want to tone down the accent a bit).
Trigonometry represents a new way for students to think about mathematical concepts. Trig functions (sin, cos, tan) are about much more than just triangles, they provide a foundation for all that’s ahead in math and are surprisingly useful throughout the sciences (you’ll be amazed how often they come up in physics and engineering!). With that in mind, it’s essential for every future scientist and engineer to have a thorough grasp of trig functions – what they mean and how they work.
My goal is to equip students with a clear and complete understanding of trig functions, so that they feel confident when they face them in future studies. Memorizing the rules of trig functions and equations won’t give students the real understanding necessary to work with them later on. But when sine and cosine click and students really get it, all the rules fall into place, and test scores go way up. Better yet, they’ll hold on to the understanding much longer. The key is comprehension before memorization.
As with all my classes, I guarantee improved test scores, and I’ll repeat any topic for free is scores don’t go up. The first meeting is always half price to give you an opportunity to verify that the lessons are worth the cost. Please contact me by email with any questions.
