About Elizabeth

I believe the largest part of being a tutor is maintaining patience with my students. From past experience, I understand that people learn in different ways. Often, classroom teachers do not have the time to individually help each student, so I see myself as the main back-up that my students can rely upon. I will calmly explain anything they do not comprehend and will answer all questions.

I have been to many parts of the world. My father was in the Navy, so, as a child, I lived in several foreign countries. I enjoy traveling and learning about other peoples and their cultures.

I can read, speak, and write Spanish as well as I do in English and I have been very well educated in the English language.

I like to help people better themselves. I never forget those ah-hah moments when my students are able to grasp a concept that has been alluding them and their eyes light up and a beautiful smile spreads across their face.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I started playing clarinet when I was ten years old. That was over forty years ago. I played in elementary school, junior high, high school, college, and graduate school. As part of my bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, I not only was in the CSUSB (California State University at San Bernardino) band, I also took music history and theory classes. And, I still play my clarinet. I sit as a third chair in the Long Beach Community Band. We practice every Thursday evening and give concerts frequently throughout the year.

ESL/ESOL

I was an ESL teacher in the Adult Education Department of Anaheim Union High School District for 15 years. I taught evening ESL classes to adults. My students were immigrants who were working toward U.S. citizenship. Over the years, I taught all the levels the program offered, from level 0 (no English whatsoever) to level 6 (ready to take the citizenship test). I still have many of the materials I used while teaching.

World History

I have a master's degree in History. Although my concentration was in international crime syndicates, specifically the Mexican Drug Cartels, I also studied Asian, American, and Latin American history.

Patient and friendly — Elizabeth tutored my daughter in Chemistry. She takes the time to explain a different way of thinking about the conversions and formulas. It was our first lesson, but I look forward to seeing my daughter's growth ...
