About Jordan

Bio

I'm a premed molecular and cellular biology major at UC Berkeley. I just transferred from Moorpark College in fall 2017. I have a passion for helping people in any way I can, and I have found that tutoring is a great way for me to utilize this passion. I worked for a tutoring company in Agoura Hills, CA for almost 2 years but had to leave due to moving to Northern California to finish up my bachelors degree at UC Berkeley before attending medical school.

I absolutely love when I see that...

I absolutely love when I see that "ah-ha!" moment in a students face when a concept sinks in for them. In the time that I have been tutoring I have helped students increase their grades significantly. This has been a very rewarding process for me and I hope to share my knowledge with as many students as possible while giving each student the dedication they deserve. In addition to tutoring, I work as an emergency medical technician in Hayward. I also do research with UC Berkeley's Center for Research and Education on Aging.

When I am tutoring, whether it be biology, chemistry, or algebra, I like to follow the same method. First I never do something for a student that they can do themselves. I find that this reinforces the knowledge they already have which makes it easier for them to understand more complicated subjects. I also never just tell a student the answer to a question unless they are really stuck.

I find that it is very important that a student gives a problem their best try before giving instruction. Above all, I make an active effort to show the student how whatever they are learning is important, either to some real world application or to another subject that interests them. I find that these methods greatly enhance the amount of knowledge that the student maintains by making the student actually care about the subject. I also encourage a free discussion type of session, rather than me simply lecturing to a student. This keeps the mind of the student active and engaged, while developing critical thinking skills which are so important to understanding more complicated subjects.

In the past 2 years, I have had great success tutoring math, all the way from elementary school math to calculus. For example, I have been working with the same student for two years in math. I have watched him go from failing algebra 1 to getting an A in geometry! My math experience comes from the many math classes I have taken, all the way up to multi variable calculus and college statistics. The many science courses I have taken also utilize different mathematical methods which have given me an even firmer grasp on many mathematical concepts.

My college career has given me a very broad understanding of the scientific field. I have taken general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, and more. In addition to biology and chemistry tutoring, I also get to apply my scientific knowledge to research at my lab at Berkeley. The many avenues down which I have utilized my scientific knowledge has kept my mind sharp and up to date on developments in the scientific field.

I love working with all kinds of students, from those who are struggling in lower level math and science courses, to those in college classes striving to get into graduate schools like me. I have experience tutoring students of all ages and I have never tutored a student I did not like. I like to keep sessions fun and engaging, as I know that math and science are often troublesome for students of all ages. Whether you are simply trying to pass Algebra 1 or get straight A's in all your classes, I am the tutor for you!

Great pronunciation lesson!

Jordan was great, I took his lesson mainly to improve my pronunciation and it was great! Native English teachers usually do not care about pronunciation a lot because they can understand what students say even if their pronunciation is not good and they often think non-native speakers do not need to speak with native’s pronunciation. However, he does care about pronunciation a lot, and he know how to improve pronunciation skill. He was great correcting it and teaching me ways of pronouncing it in the right way. We worked at my house, he was here on time, friendly and made me comfortable
