I have 6 years of experience tutoring students, high school through adult education, in Spanish, English, Biology, and Writing. I have been tutoring SAT now for a whole year.
I tutor Spanish at all levels, beginner through advanced. I have my MA in Spanish, and I studied abroad in Spain for a year. I give presentations in Spanish and translate for a legal services non-profit, too. Finally, I taught two years of Spanish 101 at the University of Wisconsin.
When I tutor English for middle and high school students, I emphasize composition and literary analysis, both skills I have honed through my bachelor's degree in Literature. SAT Reading and Writing are tests on which I've prepared students to do score high.
For AP and IB Biology students, I break down concepts in easy-to-understand ways and assist with memorizing the large biological vocabulary required. My college classes in Biology, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Marine Biology/ Oceanography, taken at UCSD, give me a strong science background.
US History is the final course I tutor. Students at both the introductory and AP levels have worked with me on comprehension, memorization, and analysis of the history in their courses.
I believe a strong tutor-student relationship is essential to successful tutoring. It is important that students feel comfortable asking questions. I endeavor to earn the respect of my students so that I can push them to do their best work. Working together with families, I help my students to succeed. Andrea is a wonderful Spanish tutor! She is kind, patient, and very knowledgeable with the Spanish language. She has worked wonders with my daughter's understanding of the language.
Andrea helped my daughter bring up her Spanish 3 grade up two letter grades in 8 weeks. My daughter was struggling all year and it was not until the end of year that she finally asked for help in order to avoid blowing out her GPA. Andrea is very patient and excited about Spanish.
Andrea has been very helpful with my tutoring. She is patient and willing to provide me with new ideas in how to improve my writing.
Before my son started Spanish 3 tutoring with Andrea he was getting a D in the class with no hope of bringing it up and looking at his grade possibly dropping to an F. After nearly 3 months of tutoring with Andrea his grade went up to a C and we couldn't be happier. Andrea has been reliable, punctual and professional. My son felt comfortable with her and she was able to explain the material and give him Spanish exercises to improve his understanding and increase his test scores to pass the class.
Andrea is very accessible and timely in responding to communications. She is fluent in Spanish and has a friendly kind demeanor that makes families and young children comfortable quickly even for the very shy. She is a skilled educator with flexibility to adapt to an individual's learning styles.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Since working for a tutoring company in Sacramento, I have tutored many young children in grade school subjects, most commonly reading and writing. For reading comprehension and fluency, I follow reading-level appropriate materials as determined by the students' current abilities and then, through repetition and focus on phonics concepts, we move forward to more difficult books. This approach has worked with first, second, and third graders very well. I let my students choose among books at their current level, which I select, and then I have them repeat the reading once or twice until they read it fluently. After a first reading we review the phonetic concepts that have been causing them difficulty. Some reading series even have word lists and phonetic practice built into the books. The parents of the children I have tutored have been very happy with my services and their childrens' progress. I look forward to working with you and your child to achieve greater success for them in school.
I have played violin for 13 years, beginning when I was eleven. I have studied with several different private teachers and mastered various bowing and fingering techniques. In high school, I played with the Portland Symphony Youth Orchestra in Portland, ME, and I was accepted twice into the Maine All State Music Festival orchestra as a Second Violin.
I have also tutored three students, seven, ten, and 14 year olds, in beginning violin.
