I am a co-recipient of the 2014 United Nations Best Teaching Practices Award. My students say when I teach them 'they feel understood'. I take the time to emotionally connect with my pupils and to set small achievable learning goals that build their self-esteem. I prioritize student success and holistic development. I appreciate the importance of the senses in learning. I am compassionate and kind hearted.
I also understand the perspective of parents. Over the last 30 years I've heard comments such as, ' I feel like I don't know how to help my child', ' I'm overwhelmed', ' I don't know what to do next', and 'I fear I'm not doing enough to support my child'. Having completed my Master of Wellness in 2014, I understand the importance of addressing parental fears, along with your child's needs. As well as working to empower students through their accomplishments, I will commit to offering parents a free 15 minute debrief after each tutoring session. Taking action is the first step to helping your child.
For some children learning to read is not an easy process. Children experiencing difficulty require explicit instruction. I hold a Bachelor of Education specializing in early literacy. I assess student's decoding, phonics and word recognition skills; along with their reading pace and accuracy. Using ongoing, measurable assessments enables me to analyze your child's specific reading needs so that I can teach (and reteach) the required skills. I also monitor motivation and confidence and provide support if needed.
I have 30 years teaching experience. The last eight years of my career have been spent teaching students with ADD/ADHD, mild dyslexia and phonics challenges. I am experienced with the PAF program which is an adaptation of the Orton Gillingham methodology, I teach using the multiple modalities of learning. I incorporate movement if necessary and I integrate mindfulness into my sessions. I am very experienced with the program Jolly Phonics program.
I teach spelling using auditory, visual and tactile strategies in predictable lesson formats. I am also experienced with other programs such as Every Day Spelling and Words Their Way.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
