About Lisa

I have been teaching for 22 years K- 9th grade. I am a firm believer in education and using technology as a tool for learning. I have known since I was young that I wanted to be a teacher. I have had wonderful teachers at every level of my schooling and think they inspired me to influence others as they influenced me. At the same time, I think it is because I had a few poor teachers along the way that I know I should be teaching. I can make a difference in the lives of my students. I am dedicated and inspired to keep learning fun and intriguing.

Teaching English as a second language or any language is not really about being an instructor in the traditional sense. You should never be lecturing or have a regimented structure to your class. Instead, your class should be fluid, creative, innovative and open. While doing do, you have to learn to be a coach. Each student and class has different needs, strong points and weak points. It is up to you to identify needs and proceed from there. The mentality in your classroom should not be that they will master English in 60 minutes, but rather that you as the teacher-coach introduce a grammar point, vocabulary or pronunciation patterns and it is up to the students to practice outside of the classroom. Point out positive things that students are doing and remind your students of their weak points. While reminding them of their weak points, do so in a constructive way and offer advice on how to rectify them. Finally, as a coach it my job to motivate the students and give them a reason for being there. Teaching students how to read has been a passion of mine.

I am Patient.
Teachers must have the patience to handle the same questions and issues over and over again.
I am Knowledgeable. If you do not have a solid understanding of the material, you’ll have a difficult time teaching it to someone else. Teachers must have comprehensive knowledge of many different topics. I am Committed to life-long learning. The field of education changes frequently. Teachers must be prepared to keep up with all of the latest developments.

Since I teach during the day, I am available after school during the week. I can meet to at a Library for an in-person lesson
or do online lessons. My base rate is $90/hour for in-person lesson, and $50/hour for an online lesson. I also offer lesson packages at a discount- contact me for more details!

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have played chess my whole life, being part of the chess club offered at Woodland Hills Library as a child. My dad is a Master in chess and taught me well. I also teach chess at school in a club that I started to Middle School students. I am a credentialed teacher who knows how to teach students many different subjects.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California. I have taught for 22 years in Los Angeles Unified School District. I have taught all grades K-6th. I have specialized in teaching phonics, reading skills, and comprehension skills to beginning readers.

Reading

I have Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Commission on Teacher Credentialing to serve California Schools.
