Tutoring offers me a chance to learn as well as to teach. If done well, tutoring expands and strengthens current knowledge by focusing on specific situations through discussion, theory, and application. Additionally, personal chemistry, that is, the ability to communicate clearly and smoothly between individuals over time is also a key success factor. It is important that a student select the tutor with the "best fit" as well as the tutor selecting the student with the "best attitude".

Learning involves new things and change. For some folks, change is very difficult. For others, change is exciting because the new information unlocks new potential areas of interest and competencies. As an architectural learner, I am constantly trying to leverage what I know in one field and apply to another field in order to understand the fundamentals quicker. In some cases, this ability also brings new insights to a situation. In addition, I am an intuitive thinker that is able to evaluate quickly. For me, knowing my own learning style is an important step in my own education and training. As a potential student of mine, I will expect you to know yourself enough to communicate to me your learning style so that we can get started quickly and efficiently. As a suggestion, I recommend taking a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) evaluation prior to contacting your first tutor. Check the internet for evaluations. The results of this will help both you and your tutor to understand how you see and interact with the world around you.

Study Skills

Study Skills

My qualifications for tutoring in Study Skills are based on my experience as a student through grad school (MBA), a professional with continuing education, a scout leader (Eagle Scout, Asst. Scoutmaster) and merit badge counselor, an adjunct professor, a home school teacher, a tutor in multiple topics, a friend, a father, and a parent. We will first find out in what method your learning is best achieved. Everybody has their preferred way of learning from auditory, tangible, taking notes, vocalization, mnemonics, music, visual, photographic memory, to old fashioned rote memory. It needn't be drudgery. One of the keys to successful learning is to make the experience fun and engaging.

Piano,

Piano

Piano is a foundational instrument for any musician. Learning the piano provides you with the ability to read in different clefs (treble, bass), assist with visualizing chord structures and progressions, visually confirm a vocal (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), tone, or instrument range. I started piano at age six and took lessons for about eight years and I have continually added to the skills I learned from that point. My ability to read bass clef allowed me to play tuba in junior high school and sousaphone in high school while taking piano and trumpet lessons. Currently, I sing in the church choir and play in the Praise Band, and Handbell Choir. While not a gifted pianist, I still enjoy the benefits that studying piano continues to provide.

Music

General Music,

General Music

I currently play trumpet and flugelhorn on a regular basis for the marching band that I direct as well as for my church. I started playing trumpet in junior high school and continued through high school to play with the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band (USC-TMB) as First Trumpet. My trumpet experience includes the 1984 Olympics (opening/closing ceremonies, and venue bands), Fleetwood Mac ("TUSK", video and in concert), local community theater, merit badge counselor (Music, and Bugling), and Bugler (Taps and other bugle calls). I am also a Marching Band Director for Venture Crew 440 (Canoga Park) and currently perform with my church Chancel Choir, Praise Band, and Bell Choir. My general music background began at the age of 6 when I started piano lessons and played in a recorder choir at church. I took piano lessons for about 5 years. Starting at 11, I took trumpet lessons for the next 8 eight years through about 3 different instructors. During this time, I was the principal tuba player in my junior high orchestra, and in high school doubled on sousaphone and trumpet. After high school, I played in jazz bands, community orchestras, and ensembles until I graduated from USC. After graduation, I played in the Laker Band, the Olympic Band, USC Alumni Band, and some community theater work. In that time, I picked up the flugelhorn, electric bass, banjo, soprano and alto recorders, melodica, electric keyboards, and harmonica. Currently, as a regular contributor in the music program at church, I have written and arranged some music. As marching band director, I must be able to read, write, perform, and communicate in addition to leading a group. As a Music and Bugling merit badge counselor, I have to know and have experience in music, music history, music performance, instrument types, and lead songs around a campfire. Though I am not degreed in music, I feel that studying, playing, and performing music for more than 40 years means that I know a little about music. If you would like to speak with my references or see/hear me perform, please request a reference or next performance venue.
