Born and raised in the United Kingdom I graduated with a BA in Modern Languages and Literature, French and Spanish, and proceeded to do a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (language teaching). After this I spent six years living and working in Spain where I taught EFL and Spanish. I then wanted to 'do my bit' for the Third World and moved to Haiti where I worked for the United Nations teaching in a Montessori teacher training school. Evacuated in 1991 I came to California where I began teaching ESL for the parents of children in the Head Start program in San Fernando as well as giving private French and Spanish classes.
I eventually took another position at a residential facility where I taught ESL to the staff and Spanish to management. In 2000 I began tutoring students in their homes which is something I really enjoy due to the personal touch and individual treatment you can give to each student. I have taught both adults and children studying varying levels of Spanish, French or ESL. I have my CBEST & am currently working for Kaplan Learning Center teaching TOEFL." Diana is a very patient and caring tutor. She helped my teenage daughter with Spanish 2 and was very encouraging and used great positive reinforcement. She helped build her confidence in Spanish. She is also very knowledgeable on the subject. I would highly recommend her.
Mitchell thought she was really good. She explained things to him in a way that he could understand easily. She listened to his needs and concerns regarding Spanish. As for a parent's point, she was punctual, and professional. We are looking forward to working with her after the winter recess.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have the British qualification of a Post Graduate Certificate of Education which qualified me to teach ESL as well as French and Spanish. After graduating I taught ESL or EFL as it was known at the time, in Spain. My students were of varying ages and levels. In England I also taught at an international school near Cambridge. Here in the USA I gave classes at the Learning Tree University and have done a lot of private one on one tutoring. I believe in teaching situational ESL that is useful and practical and in encouraging students to speak and listen rather than just learning the grammar. I love teaching and am accustomed to working with many different cultures.
