About Travis

I approach tutoring with the understanding that no one learns exactly the same way.

In conjunction with patience, I approach a concept or problem from different angles until understanding is achieved.

I started tutoring in 2003 shortly after starting college. It was in a formal 1-on-1 setting. I left that job after 2 years and moved into the IT Industry, although I have been doing freelance tutoring ever since.

I am comfortable tutoring all math a student could encounter in high school and college. This includes: Algebra I/II, Geometry, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Differentials, Linear Algebra.

I am also able to tutor high school and college level Chemistry and Physics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Math is one of my strongest subjects. Algebra 2 in particular is one of the most requested subjects I have tutored in. Algebra 2 covers a large array of topics that prepare a student for Pre-Calculus and Calculus. In pursuit of my Engineering Degree, I've had to take a lot of higher level math courses which all rely on fundamental concepts even from Algebra 2.

Calculus

I have a degree in Engineering from UC Irvine and Calculus is no stranger to an engineer. It is the fundamental math that all engineers must know and use.
I have also taken the AP Calculus AB Exam and I received a 4 on the test.
Going from Algebra based math to Calculus can be difficult for most. However, I find that once a student realizes Calculus is a beast of its own, its fundamental concepts are not hard to grasp.

Chemistry

I took the AP test in High School, which I passed with a 4. I took several chemistry courses in college for my engineering degree. I also have experience tutoring chemistry in a formal environment for several years.

General Computer

I have over 10 years of IT experience. I have supported residential and commercial aspects of IT. This even includes training other users on general computing and beyond.

Macintosh

I work in IT and have been doing so for the last 10 years. I've had to support Macintosh users in a home and enterprise environment. I am well versed in Mac OS X 10.5 (tiger) to 10.8 (mountain lion). I am also familiar with iOS.

Microsoft Excel

As a previous college student, Excel was important to data collection, sorting, and presenting. I use it daily in my everyday jobs as a Computer Systems Analyst. Everything from basic data collection to macros and pivot tables.

Microsoft Outlook

I worked in at a private college doing IT. All my users use Outlook with hosted exchanged from Microsoft (Office 365). I have to support users with varied levels of computer knowledge.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a previous college student, PowerPoint was important to presenting my homework and projects. I use it daily in my everyday jobs as a Computer Systems Analyst. I often present materials related to current projects down to even a simple slide on introducing myself.

Microsoft Windows

I have been in the IT industry for the last 8 years. I have supported XP, Vista, 7 and 8. I also have experience with windows server 2003 and 2008.

Microsoft Word

As a previous college student, Word was important daily; from essays, notes, and beyond. I use it daily in my everyday jobs as a Computer Systems Analyst. Everything from creating technical specs to simple correspondence.

Networking (Computer)

I've worked in the IT industry for the last 8 years. I have worked on home and commercial networks and servers. I currently work in a position that requires me to support the network, servers, and workstations at a private college.

Physics

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering where most of my classes related to physics in some way, shape, or form. From classical to general relativity and even basic quantum mechanics, I saw it all.

Precalculus

With a degree in Electrical Engineering I have a good understanding of higher level math and science. It gives me a a good grasp of higher level concepts and subject matter.
Coupled with my previous tutoring experience, I know how difficult these subjects can be for students.
Precalculus is a cornerstone from Algebraic Math into Calculus and beyond. Having traveled the path myself I can see what is ahead, and I am able to give the insight students need in this subject.

Trigonometry

higher level math and science. It gives me a a good grasp of higher level concepts and subject matter.
