My name is Marita. I have a dual PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry. I was a chemistry tutor in college and later, a general, organic and biochemistry instructor. My greatest teaching experience came from homeschooling my children from kindergarten through high school (17+ years). At times, I also included their friends in small classes and co-ops. As I taught science, math, language arts and social studies, my own horizons expanded immensely as I strove to understand various learning styles, stages and temperaments. I watched and listened to countless seminars and videos by expert teachers who shared their techniques and experience. I became an avid student of how we learn and soon incorporated guided inquiry, games, technology, differentiated instruction and an interdisciplinary approach to enhance my students’ education. I ploughed through countless curricula to find materials best suited to each one. These experiences taught me that educating someone doesn’t just mean transmitting knowledge. An effective teacher strives to understand the needs of her student and discern how the student learns and thinks. I believe this is what makes tutoring so exciting. In many ways it is an ideal teaching situation – one on one interaction with a mentor who is dedicated to serving a single person’s needs in the best way possible.
In a homeschool setting, I taught Honors Biology and Chemistry. My students achieved SAT Subject test scores ranging from 640 to 770 (out of 800) in these subjects. I have served as an AP Biology teacher for a large homeschool co-op. All my students took the AP exam and 99% earned scores of 4 or better. Two students also took the SAT Biology exam and achieved perfect scores of 800. Eager to continue offering the benefits of the AP program to my children, as well as other homeschooled students if they so desired it, I completed College Board workshops in AP Chemistry and Physics 1. As a science tutor, I’ve found that students most often seek help with problem solving, not realizing that they have an inadequate understanding of the underlying concept. If I suspect this is the case, I may have them do a hands on activity or watch a simulation to help with comprehension. Then I suggest that they try the problem again, and I walk them through the solution if needed. Sometimes, it is poor study habits that render a subject difficult, not the subject itself. If I observe this, I try to help the student come up with a study schedule or suggest a learning technique. I also encourage them to develop consistency in the way they study.
As an independent homeschooler in California, I did not have access to a guidance counselor or any other career guidance services that brick and mortar schools normally offer. I had to fulfill this role for my children and for other homeschoolers who sought my advice. I educated myself on preparation for college and the college application process by attending seminars and workshops on the Common App, essay writing, crafting a cohesive college application and minimizing college costs. I guided my children’s high school course choices, prepared transcripts, school reports and other documentation needed for the college admission process and coached them in preparation for various AP exams, the PSAT, ACT and SAT subject tests. As a result of my teaching and college counseling efforts, both my children were admitted to 4 year universities with substantial scholarships. I would love to share what I have learned and help our youth achieve their college goals.
I would love to get to know you and hear about your needs! At first contact, I will ask questions about your learning goals and prior to the first lesson, I will strive to find resources that I think will benefit you, based on our communications. I welcome feedback from students and parents and am happy to modify my teaching methods to suit each individual. I would be honored to partner with you and to serve as your educational facilitator in the sciences or in the college admission process. I look forward to hearing from you.

Marita taught Chemistry for SAT subject test to my high school senior son. I picked her based on her introduction herself at he website. She described herself very well. She is an excellent tutor. She definitely knows subject and experienced in tutoring. She motivated my son very well, my son was looking forward to her sessions. She was messaging us through the the week, asking subjects my son wanted to cover and sending resources to supplement her tutoring. She was always on time and professional. She was patiently explaining subjects and teaching. She even prepared power points slides to teach certain subjects. I definitely recommend her for Chemistry tutoring.Izzet, 4 lessons with Marita
