Bio

I am a Korean-American graduate student at the University of Bonn, a top 5 institution in mathematics in Europe (first in Germany). I have been tutoring for three years in the college setting. I generally tutor graduate and undergraduate mathematics, however I have teaching experience with calculus and linear algebra. I also have experience with high-school/middle-school algebra and other topics (such as pre-calculus) through private tutoring with families and friends.

As for credentials, over the past few years, I have attended the following universities:

UC Berkeley (Berkeley, CA), Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea), University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), and San Francisco State University (San Francisco, CA)

At Berkeley, I researched algebra and complete my senior year there. I spent a year in Seoul for studying abroad where I experienced the good (and the bad) parts of Asian universities. At the University of Rochester, I worked with a high ranking analysis professor on distance problems. At San Francisco State, I graduated with a Bachelors in mathematics for advanced studies. My undergraduate paper was published in a top peer-reviewed journal in mathematics.

As someone who has attended several universities, I do not believe in a general method when tackling the education problem as every individual is different. I develop a method of tutoring for a student based on his/her individual needs. In general, the layout I use per session is: I ask how much the student understands; I test them on their understanding; I provide intuition and motivation till they catch up to their desired understanding of the subject, and I finish with an assisted homework session. If there is no homework provided, I can provide exercises on the spot.

It is because of this I strongly find a good basis in calculus is required.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

Differential equations, partial or ordinary, are required to compute important solutions to physical problems, but moreover, guarantee that under some constraints, a solution "exists" and is "unique." In algebraic topology, differential equations characterize something called "manifold topology" which allows us to distinguish between two different "manifold topologies" by showing solutions are different. I use a lot of theoretical differential equations, but as problems become more convoluted, solid understanding of basic problems are needed as these become the basic building blocks for intuition.
Discrete Math,

In research, discrete mathematics is a basic required tool. For any research in math, set theory and logic are the fundamental building blocks. Induction and counting arguments such as the pigeon-hole principle are used to an incredible extent when trying to prove a pattern in some complex concept. These are all components of research that I use with great care as one fallacy can ruin an entire paper.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is used in almost every field in mathematics. The concept of 'vector spaces' over 'fields' is abstract enough to help prove things in many fields, but also concrete enough in the sense they are 'realistic' mathematical objects. For research, it is a basic tool, but besides research, I have also assisted a professor for the class; I made solution sets for problems and grades the homework. I also advised students to come see me during my tutoring sessions if they required help.
