About Dr. Candace

My BA is in Speech Communication with a minor in Theatre. I am a college professor and award-winning actor. I have had the opportunity to live in and travel to many countries and build upon the foundation I learned as an undergraduate in Speech Pathology and Phonetics,. This work afforded opportunities to complete commercial work as a voice-over artist, specializing in foreign dialects.

My doctoral work was completed around the theme of interprofessional healthcare communication using improvisational theatre techniques. I use these methods to make learning fun. The research of Bloom, et al. state that the most effective method of learning is to create a safe environment and introduce an element of play, which is exactly what I do. Students typically grasp the interactive lessons quickly because they recall the role play and can immediately apply the lessons to real life.

I have taught in the university setting for several years at the undergraduate and graduate level, which includes many ESL students. I decided to join Wyzant because there is a great need for quality ESL tutors. My varied class schedule allows me time to offer these services to serious ESL students who desire to succeed in the USA.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Beginning with the high school Speech and Debate Team, I learned the theory and practice of public speaking: structure, content and delivery. I won numerous awards for extemporaneous, impromptu, interpretive reading. and after dinner speeches. As a result, I was awarded a full scholarship for undergraduate study in Speech Communication. During that time, I traveled and competed with the Speech Team. As a senior, I was employed part time as a speech coach and speech meet judge.
It was as an undergrad that I learned the phonetic alphabet and began (as an actor) to study dialects.
I graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1970 with a BA in Speech Communications and Theater.

My speaking (and acting) career began soon after when I was employed as a flight attendant with Pan American Airways. Since I had the qualifications, I was enlisted as a part of their public relations team. I gave speeches in the US and abroad on their behalf. Also during those years, I acted in my first commercial, also on behalf of PAA. During those years, I lived in many cities in the US and abroad, and made it my business to further my study of various dialects.

As a theater artist, I have taught acting/directing to all ages/stages. I founded an improvisational theater company in the San Francisco East Bay area in 1994 and began teaching improv to business and in acting school in 1995. I have been represented in San Francisco by BOOM Talent since 1993, and am a SAG-AFTRA actor. As such, I have used my knowledge of dialects as a voice-over artist. (mp3 available)

After raising a family, I started back as a professional public speaker in 2003. [I had completed a 5 year research project that became an award-winning documentary film, Micropremature Babies: How Low Can You Go?] I worked through the Agency, Standing Ovations, in San Diego. At present, I am represented in NYC by Promenade Speakers.

In 2008, I completed a 9-month professional speaker course offered by the National Speakers Assoc. By 2010, I qualified to become a professional member, and speak professionally to this day.

My doctoral work is in interprofessional communication using applied theatrical exercises. I utilize these methods to tutor my university ESL students and personal coaching clients with great success.
