About Eric

I have always loved writing and teaching. I have published some of my essays and poetry and have been teaching and tutoring English and ESL for many years. I have worked, as well, as a social worker.

I tutored English and ESL for the English department of City College of San Francisco, and have had my own tutoring and education consulting service since 1996. I got my BA in writing and psychology at City College of NY; went on to get a master's in teaching from University of San Francisco; and am currently completing my PhD in Higher Education.

I love the English language and truly enjoy helping my students become more competent and comfortable in it. I am a very experienced teacher/tutor of English, Reading, and ESL; and I am very patient and never pressure my students. I think you'd enjoy working with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have considerable experience teaching in Special Education classes with children and young adults diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. I have worked in group homes as a manager and as a counselor with individuals diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and have considerable experience counseling and teaching these individuals. Additionally, over the years, I have tutored a large number of children and adults with ADD and ADHD issues. I also have a background working as a clinical case manager with a clinical caseload including clients with ADD and ADHD diagnoses and issues. I also have worked in a state mental hospital with patients exhibiting the symptoms of ADD and of ADHD. For the past four years, I have worked through a California state agency with a client on the Autism Spectrum who has serious issues related to ADD and ADHD issues in addition to autism.

Aspergers

I am a vendorized personal assistant through SF’s state of California golden gate regional center (for persons with developmental disabilities). In this capacity I have worked closely for four years with a man who has Aspergers syndrome and I have become very familiar with this disability and skilled in assisting and supporting my client who has Aspergers syndrome.

Criminal Justice

I have two certificates in Paralegal Studies (City College of SF and SF State University). I served for three years as an intern at the Mission Community Criminal Defense Project in SF, where I worked closely with attorneys defending clients charged with misdemeanors as well as felonies. As a legal advocate for the Homeless Advocacy Project of the SF Bar Association I often worked with clients facing criminal charges. I am familiar with the California Penal Code and with criminal law generally. I am also quite familiar with constitutional law. I am adept at reading the law and understanding and interpreting it. I won a coveted award for my work with clients at the Homeless Advocacy Project. I have come to have a special interest in criminal law.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher/tutor for over 40 years. During that time, I have worked with a great many young and elementary-age children. I have taught elementary school-age students as a tutor, teacher and instructional aide in the public and private sectors.

I hold a masters in Child Development with a minor in Educational Psychology. Additionally, I hold a masters in Teaching. I am currently completing my PhD in Education.

I have special skills and experience teaching/tutoring young children, grades K-6 [in addition to considerable experience with older students].

For many years I have worked - and currently work - in the after school programs of the San Francisco public schools. There I have supervised students, in the elementary school grades, in recreation and in academics. I have helped students complete their daily homework assignments and related academic work. Very often students come to me seeking help with questions or difficulties they are encountering in various academic subject areas ranging from Math to English to Science, as well as other subject areas. I enjoy doing this and am quite skilled and experienced in this kind of teaching.

Social Studies

I have studied social studies and political science as an undergraduate and graduate student. I have always had a keen interest in social studies and consider myself extremely well read and well versed in history, civics, political science, government, american democratic processes and system; as well as the way in which our legislative, judiciary and executive branches function individually and interact with checks and balances. I am especially familiar with american history and the history of the democratic process in our nation and how the constitution has evolved and how it works. I am extremely well read in just about all areas of social studies- geography, history and government, including the american presidency and state governments.

I hold a BA in Psychology and English; a Masters in Human Development; a Masters in Teaching; and am currently completing my PhD in Education - anticipating receiving my PhD this summer. I also have two certificates in Paralegal Studies (City College of SF and SF State University). I served for three years as an intern at the Mission Community Criminal Defense Project in SF

Study Skills

I am a veteran teacher and tutor. Over many years I have worked with patience and dedication with children and adults tutoring in areas such as English, Social studies, math, science, and reading and writing. I have also done a great deal of tutoring and coaching in study skills, which are so critically important and basic for academic success. I am patient, supportive and persistent. I don’t give up on my students. Overall, I have had excellent results.

I hold a BA in Psychology and English; a Masters in Human Development; a Masters in Teaching; and am currently completing my PhD in Education - anticipating receiving my PhD this summer.

I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the National Education Association.

I greatly enjoy helping students improve their study skills and find this area of tutoring to be particularly interesting and worthwhile.
