About Judith

Not your ordinary writing tutor. 1) A former official scorer of the SAT Essay Exam, who knows all the secrets of a high score, 2) A former Associate Professor of writing at three California universities and many private media organizations, who has worked with students of all capabilities, backgrounds and ages, and 3) Most importantly, more than a tutor -- a highly successful, award-winning writer herself who has worked for George Lucas Films, the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, AOL, CBS, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services, Bank of America, Fox Television and many more of the most respected companies and agencies in America. My philosophy was always "learn from those who do it" so when I graduated from college, I went straight to a successful newspaper to be trained by the experts, then skipped over to radio for on-the-job training, and then a few years later went to Hollywood to be personally mentored by Emmy Award winning TV producer Danny Arnold. My experience tells me: if you want the best, go to those who practice what they teach.

I've been writing for 35 years. I started out in printed media, then progressed to radio, network television (first position -- writer for the popular "Barney Miller" show which then led to a CBS movie-of-the-week, more episodes and eventually a specialty in documentaries). Soon corporations and companies were coming to me for writing of videos, articles, web sites, and everything else they needed. Individuals began asking for help in writing and editing their books. Universities invited me to teach writing courses. And students of all ages began seeking my help, especially high school and college students and particularly for essay help on college admittance tests and college applications. Teachers then asked me to tutor/consult with their students. I served for a while as the writing consultant for students at the prestigious Washington, D.C. private schools, St. Alban's and National Cathedral. My tutoring "career" developed naturally and unplanned and has turned into my greatest joy. I still write, but it's important to me to continue to pass on my learning to others. In fact, I consider that a responsibility for all professionals.

My approach is simple: Writing is all about a story. And everyone has a story (lots of them in fact). I connect with each student, explore their thoughts and experiences with them, and help them turn those thoughts and experiences into a solid essay or report, adapting to a given question/topic if necessary. We continue to refine the story/essay until it's more than solid -- it's a gem. I've helped students write for every type of assignment in many different classes and subjects. By the end, we're usually great friends. I still hear from students I coached 25 years ago (and some are now professional writers themselves). Anyone can write a good essay or paper. They simply need encouragement in finding their voice and that is what I focus on -- maybe I should call myself a "voice coach". I also, of course, help with grammar, structure, and all the other rules of writing. (Yes, I know, I shouldn't have ended a previous sentence with the preposition "on." But sometimes we sacrifice the rules for style.)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored numerous students of all ages (5 to 75) in English and writing, with a special focus on college admission tests and college applications, but also helping with reports, books, fictional pieces, and anything required by their curriculum. I also served as an official scorer of the SAT Essay Exam and am an expert on the tips for attaining a high score on all college admissions tests. In addition, I was an Associate Professor of writing at three major universities. Perhaps most importantly, I'm a highly successful award-winning writer myself who has been writing articles, scripts, web sites, and books for over 30 years. Mastery of English, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension has been essential to my career. Most of my audiences and clients are quite educated and sophisticated, including National Geographic and federal agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security. When I tutor students in English my first rule is to use source materials that interest them, that appeal to their age group, and often that are humorous. I find that a lighthearted approach relaxes them and makes them far more receptive to new information.

ACT Reading

I have been tutoring students in test preparation for over twenty years and am a succesful professional writer whose work entails enormous amounts of reading and research. I understand fully the methods for comprehension, integration and distillation of information. Students also appreciate my light, often humorus approach that eases their tension.

Grammar

Besides being a tutor, I've been a highly successful writer for 35 years. It's been essential to develop and hone a highly sophisticated knowledge and use of proper grammar. I'm also the writer/co-writer of three published books and the editor/consultant on numerous others. Being an expert grammarian is simply a requirement for my work. Furthermore, I was credentialed and served as an official scorer on the SAT Essay Exam. I also taught writing, including grammar of course, at three major universities in California. I tutor through personally developed exercises that are fun and lighthearted - seldom do I use the rote method of drilling and tests so commonly used.

Literature

First of all, I am the author of "The World's 100 Greatest Books," a popular CD program designed to introduce the public to our finest works of literature. I was selected for this project due to my own extensive knowledge of literature and my long and vast writing career, which has required familiarity with great literature, past and present. I've tutored numerous students of all ages in English, literature and writing, with a special focus on college admission tests and college applications, but also helping with anything required by their curriculum. When I tutor students in literature, my priority is always to 1) personalize it. Find ways to relate it directly to the student's own life and experiences. 2) Relate it to our current times and events. I try to bring the book to life in a number of ways and I train the student with those same tools to use independently through their entire life.

Proofreading

I'm not only a tutor - I'm a professional writer and editor who has edited hundreds of published articles and books, scripts, web content, brochures, and almost every form of media, for very sophisticated organizations such as National Geographic, the Department of Health and Human Services, and many others. My proofreading skills have been honed over a 35-year career that required a keen understanding and knowledge of grammar, structure, tone and attention to detail. I also qualified as and served as an official scorer of the SAT Essay Exam. I help students with proofreading by breaking it down into separate bite-size categories that don't overwhelm them and I include many humorous examples of "proofreading gone wrong." My experience, after twenty years of tutoring and teaching, is that nothing stimulates learning better than humor.

Reading

First of all, I am the author of "The World's 100 Greatest Books," a popular CD program produced by Inteliquest Systems, designed to introduce the public to, or deepen its understanding of, our finest works of literature - to in fact teach them how to read these works. I was selected for this project due to my own extensive knowledge of literature and my long and vast writing career, which has required research/reading and comprehension of vast amounts of varied reading material. I have tutored numerous students of all ages in reading and writing, with a special focus on college admission tests and college applications, but also helping with classroom assignments and tests. I was also an Associate Professor of writing at three major universities and introduced my students to the principle that "the best writers are the best readers." A life-long connoisseur of reading myself, I trained my students to read with discernment and attention. Perhaps most importantly, I'm a highly successful award-winning writer myself who has been writing and editing articles, scripts, web sites, and published books for over 30 years. Mastery of reading skills has been essential to my career. When I tutor students in reading skills, my priority is always to 1) personalize the material. Find ways to relate it directly to the student's own life and experiences. 2) Relate it to our current times and events. 3) If relevant, help them learn about the author, for an author always has his/her own compelling life story and once the student gets to know them, I find they are much more understanding of and receptive to the material itself. This applies whether the student is 5 years old or 18. If I'm allowed to select the instructional materials I always choose something of special appeal to the student so the initial learning of reading skills comes easily, with interest, and even with humor. Once that is accomplished, I help them transfer these abilities to class assignments.

SAT Reading

My lengthy and successful writing career has required in-depth research/reading and the comprehension of vast amounts of varied material. I know all the methods for developing comprehension and discernment skills, which vary depending on the learning style of each student. Because of that skill, I've been tutoring students in test preparation for twenty years. In addition I was an official scorer of the SAT Essay Test and am familiar with all the reading, writing, and English sections of the SAT. If I'm allowed to select training materials I always choose something of special appeal to the student so the initial learning of reading skills comes easily, with interest, and even with humor. Once that is accomplished, I help them transfer these abilities to standard SAT reading exercises.

SAT Writing

I served as an official scorer of the SAT Essay Exam and know many tips and secrets for obtaining a high score. I have tutored and prepared numerous students for the SAT writing section and all have earned high scores. In addition, I'm a successful professional writer and am a former Associate Professor of writing at three universities.

Vocabulary

Besides being a tutor, I'm a highly successful and experienced writer who has worked for such esteemed clients as the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Bank of America, AOL, IT&T, CBS and many, many others. Through a 35 year career, much of it serving educated audiences,it has been essential and inevitable to develop and hone a highly sophisticated vocabulary. I'm also the writer/co-writer of three published books and the editor/consultant on numerous others. A rich and broad vocabulary is simply a requirement for my work. My tutoring, which has been chiefly but not exclusively focused on writing, always includes training in vocabulary development and the appropriate use of a varied vocabulary. I seldom use the rote method of vocabulary lists and tests with my students. Instead we do fun exercises together with verbal stories, lighthearted writing assignments, and even video tapes of celebrities, to recreate what is said with more powerful and succinct language.
