St. Mary's College of California (Communication - English)
Dear Parents and Students,
F.I.S.H. = Fresh Ideas Start Here!
I believe it is important to know a little bit about a tutor so you can decide if they might be a good fit for you so I would like to share a little of my background with you! I am from The Bay Area where I attended Carondelet High School and earned my B.A. in Communication from Saint Mary’s College of California while maintaining a 3.75 GPA. My studies included a Major in Communication with a Minor in English. During the summers, I attended The University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming for Summer School studies in Geology. Recently, I attended The University of Iowa's renowned Summer Writing Program where I acquired more writing skills in Fiction & Nonfiction.
I believe patience, a great sense of humor and strong communication skills -- listening, especially -- help make an excellent tutor. I believe it's about understanding the needs of the student and what subjects they are requiring help in so they feel more confident in their skills and abilities to master these "challenging" subjects!
By nature, I am personable, a hard worker with drive and ambition that help me to be an instrumental tutor. I am gifted with a fundamental work ethic that supports a deep desire to succeed -- I will give 100% towards helping any student become self-confident in their "challenging" subjects.
I have a tremendous experience in tutoring students of all ages. As I lived in Sacramento for a couple years, I tutored children in 3rd-8th grade where I constantly helped with their homework assignments. Subjects ranged from English (Composition, Grammar, Literature, Proofreading, Reading and Spelling), Vocabulary and Writing, Math (Elementary and Algebra), Science (Elementary and Geology) to Social Studies. Being involved in these students' education, I saw vast improvements in their grades where they began achieving “A’s” and “B’s.” Too, their overall attitude was better and they had more confidence! Since moving back to The Bay Area over a year ago, I have continued to work with students from all ages with various needs in certain subjects -- grade school through College and Graduate School.
With every student I have helped, I strive to have them gain an understanding of the importance to time-management and using a "planner" to stay organized and be aware of deadlines.
As for where I tutor, I prefer working with students at local libraries or Starbucks; however, I do occasionally meet the student in the comfort of their home.
I would enjoy helping you with any subjects you are "shaky" in so you become more confident in the curriculum. I can do this through a good sense of humor, actively listening and having a fun and outgoing attitude! I really look forward to working with you!

For tutoring two (2) or MORE students during one hour, the rate is $85.00/hour.
Tia is an excellent tutor, my daughter has been with Tia for a month and she enjoys her time with Tia. She makes the tutoring academically fun-filled and my daughter always looks forward to her class. She is very thorough in all the subjects, well prepared before the class. She gives the detailed class review after she completes every class, that make my life easier.
Tia has helped my daughter with her study skills as she adjusted to the academic demands of high school. She is reliable, punctual, and patient. I highly recommend her as a tutor!
Our first session was fantastic. She was prompt cheerful and knowledgeable. She was able to assess my son's needs and he got a lot accomplished. A great start to a successful school year!!
Tia spent two hours with our son last evening and he related how much he enjoyed working with Tia and how clear and concise she was in presenting/reviewing Geology subject matter. She is an excellent tutor.
Tia tutors my son. He is 14 years old and a freshman in High School. He was only recently diagnosed with ADD inattentive disorder. Tia has helped him get organized and has inspired him to put forth more effort towards his classes.
Even though school year started a month ago, my 6th grader is already overwhelmed with the amount of homework she brings home every day. We have always empowered her to be a self-starter but we recognize learning can be a bit difficult because things don't come so easily for our young student. For the longest time, I had been doubtful about hiring a tutor because my daughter has always gotten good grades.
What made me change my mind is seeing her work twice as hard to keep up good grades while yet she is only in 6th grade! What can she expect in High School or in College? My daughter’s learning style if far different from mine. I have a difficult time understanding her thought process.
While we praise good grades, we are focusing on providing my daughter learning tools that could last her a lifetime. I started exploring the possibility of hiring a tutor that could teach my daughter good learning techniques as opposed to teaching to just obtain good grades. We were fortunate enough to found Tia!
Tia's charismatic personality is truly a joy! She is teaching my daughter to read intuitively and is helping her identify good pointers to make her learning effective and yet fun. My daughter is very enthusiastic about learning more and she is truly looking forward to her next session with Tia.
The report is amazing. It's very very clear and give us as parents a full pic on what you did.
Thank you very much. Great job !
Tia is tutoring my 2 kids and they are doing well. She spends extra effort to prepare for her lesson and it shows in the quality of her tutoring sessions.
We had our first lesson with her today! She is a great fit for us, very organized, detailed and helpful! Lucky to have found her to help my son. She has such a sweet disposition and my son felt very comfortable with her.
My son is a master of creating decoys and diversions and Tia is equally as masterful at reigning him in, gently but firmly, to the task at hand. She employs a variety of techniques, to reach even the most "resistant' learners, making their sessions fun every time. My son's writing skills have improved dramatically, along with his ability to write independently. Tia has been instrumental in taking the intimidation out of writing, and replacing it with confidence. While my son may never LOVE writing, he certainly does love working with Tia. We are very grateful to have connected with Tia.
We had a difficult task for Tia. We brought our adopted 15 yr. old son over from Ukraine in February and knew he needed help with English desperately. With Tia's extreme patience and perseverance we are getting there. Kolya is in 9th grade and is 2 points away from getting a “B” in English, which is quite an accomplishment for his first 4 months in the US. We have a long road ahead to get him on par with the rest of his age group and intend to use Tia all the way.
Tia was a great tutor and really helped my daughter with her struggles. She found high school a little hard to get her grades back up. Tia helped her with organization and study skills. She helped her find a more efficient way to get her homework done with better grades.
My daughter loves learning again and feels great now that her grades are improving. (Gabriela)
Thank you very much Tia I love learning, I feel free, like I can do things! (Davina)
Tia is very patient and a good communicator. She commends her student with positive feedback when appropriate. Tia motivates here students to work harder.
Tia has been working with my fifteen year old daughter with her English homework and essays. We could not be happier with all she had done. Tia is attentive, caring and patient. Tia had helped not only with my daughters grade but her confidence as well. Thank you Tia - working with you is a blessing!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Some examples of areas in History I have expertise in are The Dust Bowl, instrumental men who helped shape America -- Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, John Pierpont Morgan, Nikola Tesla and Henry Ford. The History Chanel also had a show that aired recently entitled, "The Men Who Built America." The History of The American West is one of my all-time favorites -- The Big Four of The Transcontinental Railroad; Manifest Destiny, Promontory Point in The Utah Territory; The role Mormons played in The American West; Native Americans and The Black Hills as well as Cavalry Commander Custer's mythology. I also have a great fascination for presidents, such as Washington, Lincoln, Eisenhower and Kennedy. I believe The History of The West is vital to our children's understanding of U.S. History as it talks about tremendous inventions but also how so many backgrounds came together to bring The United States together as truly, The U.S. is a "melting pot" of so many ethnic backgrounds and cultures.
I have expertise in being a Make-Up Artist and understanding the needs of various skin types due to my having worked for Clinique Cosmetics for a couple of years. I have applied make-up for proms, weddings and special events. The key to being able to beautify a face is making sure that the skin is prepped appropriately -- whether you have dry, combination or oily skin. Also, having hydrated skin comes from within by drinking plenty of water. Understanding skin color and knowledge of foundations for skin concerns and types was vital to being a Clinique Consultant so I could best serve the clientele. As for eye makeup, I have a tremendous love for highly pigmented colors --M.A.C. eye shadows are one of my favorites but also Clinique, Dior, Sephora and Smashbox. However, I also do well with neutral colors, too! Although I worked for Clinique, I strive to use various cosmetic brands for variation in my tools. For example, foundations I love are Revlon's "ColorStay" and Urban Decay's "Naked;" Foundation Primers are Smashbox's "Photo Finish" and Sephora's Collection "Perfecting Ultra Smoothing." I also utilize a range of brushes for application of eye shadows, complexion powders, eyebrow-shading and blush. One last thing for application of any color to the cheekbones (blush) or eyelids (eye shadow) is to blend, blend, blend!
As I have tremendous experience in working with 1st graders on up through 8th graders regularly with their homework, I have seen vast improvements in their belief in themselves. They have gained a stronger grasp of certain subjects due to my tutoring. Their grades have also improved to where they are achieving "A's" and "B's." For example, some of the subjects I have worked with them on are Math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), English (Spelling, Vocabulary Words and their definitions, writing complete sentences as well as paragraphs and punctuation), Reading (at least 20-30 minutes per night) and Social Studies (Cultures, Religions, Languages, Geography, U.S. and World History, Ancient Civilizations and Archaeology, etc.).
I have a great amount of experience with Elementary Math from working with 4th graders on up through 8th graders as I began tutoring when I resided in Sacramento in 2011/2012. I have expertise with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, counting, word problems and ratios. In helping children learn, I make it fun for them along with patience and a goofy attitude! Thus, helping them become better skilled in Math, homework is more fun with a sense of humor!
While earning my Bachelor's degree in Communication, I also minored in English. I have tremendous experience in utilizing the English language whether it is via the written word or communicating in person. English spans the usage of proper: grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, reading, understanding literature and mastering the ability to communicate effectively. My experiences have involved numerous works in writing my dissertation, fictional stories and essays. I have helped my two stepchildren to read and utilize English properly in their essays and speaking while not using "slang." I can help all ages (2nd grade to college) in understanding and employing English properly.
My experience in Geology is terrific in that many Summers, I would take courses in Geology at The University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming -- a University highly regarded for its academia in Geology. I did field digs that also dealt in Paleontology. I understand a lot of topics in Geology such as Plate Tectonics (how islands are formed, "hot spots," earthquakes, various faults, mid-oceanic ridge spreading, etc.), The supercontinent "Pangea," various rocks --igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary, Geologic structures, Earth's formation, Weathering and Erosion, Volcanology and The Ocean Floor... As I love this subject VERY much, my brain has been a sponge that has soaked up so much information on this topic!
Various study skills are helpful to students in different ways. Working with my two stepchildren, I have instilled the use of "planners" and time management to help them stay organized but also helps them to prioritize which subjects to work on first for homework. I find to help with memorization, repetition is important such as writing something out a few times and re-reading key points. The use of acronyms and mnemonics also helps with memorization. I will also use drawings/diagrams and small summaries to help condense concepts. Also, I enjoy the use of flash cards to help with memorization as they are good as visual training.
I believe strongly in constantly expanding one's vocabulary as it subtly shows your education. A vocabulary is the "meat-and-potatoes" for communication and obtaining knowledge. Having an extensive vocabulary is a common denominator in being able to comprehend a certain language as well as write and speak that specific language, such as English, for example. Also, for those preparing for their SAT exam or ACT exam, one of the sections is writing and having a good vocabulary will help a student in diction, grammar and usage. Reading helps increase a student's vocabulary, too.
During my Senior year in college, I presented my senior thesis, "The Effects Divorce has on Only-Children who are Daughters." It was a 110-page work that I interviewed 12 females to gain evidence in support of my hypothesis which turned into my thesis. I also have been thoroughly involved in writing fiction and taking creative writing courses. One of my stories, "Geology Bed Rocking," was published. I have an eye for punctuation and enjoy refining a piece of work until I feel it is reflective of my best talents.
