American University (Political Science)
Hi, my name is Stephanie. I graduated from American University in Washington, DC with my BA in Political Science and also completed a Double Minor in Education and International Studies. I was born and raised in the East San Gabriel Valley and have recently returned to the area.
I've followed a lifelong passion for education issues through various work and volunteer experiences. I enjoy working one-on-one with people and have especially enjoyed working with young children and seeing their confidence grow. I strongly believe that all students can learn and succeed if they have are given all the right tools to succeed. The individualized attention that one gets through tutoring can make all the difference.
I spent 2 years working as a Literacy Coordinator for a children's literacy program in Los Angeles that pairs volunteer reading partners with K-5 students in LAUSD. In this role, I have provided support to nearly 100 volunteers in their work with students and have developed and delivered enrichment meetings for volunteers on topics such as choosing the right books, literacy games and activities, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and working with English Language Learners.
I have experience working one-on-one with children in reading, writing, and math.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was an Education Studies minor in college. In the past, I have tutored elementary-age students struggling in reading and math. One of my students was a bilingual first grade student and over the course of the semester, we were able to see her reading levels and confidence increase through testing. I currently work at a children's literacy program as a volunteer coordinator for K-5 students. Part of my job is supporting our volunteers through enrichment meetings, where I lead sessions on topics like literacy games, choosing the right book for your student, vocabulary development, etc.
I really enjoy working with elementary students. It's such an important time to set the foundation for future student success. With more time, patience, and encouragement, I truly believe all students can succeed.
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and graduated with high honors. In addition to my strong academic background, I have hands on experience working in political offices and non-profit organizations. This combination allows me to better connect material to students by drawing connections between the theoretical to every day life.
I've volunteered one-on-one with students reading below grade level to increase their reading comprehension skills, confidence, vocabulary, etc.
I currently work as a volunteer coordinator for a children's literacy program and actively support volunteers' work with students, through suggested activities and by delivering monthly enrichment meetings.
