About Leslie

Hello!

As my first “official” private tutoring job, I worked with a junior high school student in reading and writing when I was in high school. I continued private tutoring during my time at Occidental College, a private liberal arts school in Los Angeles. Over the course of my time at Occidental, I tutored two students in calculus AB and one student in algebra.

I also have 3.5 years of experience working directly with students in the school setting, as I served as a tutor at a junior/senior high school in a wide range of classrooms and for a broad variety of levels. I tutored in English, history, and math classrooms. Among these classrooms, I tutored in Advanced Placement (AP) classrooms, Special Day Classes (SDC), regular classrooms, and honors classes. At this same school, I also was an academic coach who provided individualized instruction for students who attended afterschool tutoring in the library.

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is to individualize instructional approaches to fit the needs of each unique student. As a graduate student in school psychology, I have frequently seen the wide breadth of skills amongst students, not only between different grades but within the same classroom! Understanding various skill levels and challenging students once they have acquired the confidence to tackle more difficult work will lead to an effective instructional approach. My ultimate job and goal as a tutor is to equip students with skills necessary for them to be self-sufficient. They then not only become confident but empowered as someone with a firm handle on the topic at hand.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
