About Brenda

Hi! All my life I have fascinated by the English language and literature. In high school, my 10th grade English teacher inspired me to want to teach because he really made the subject come alive. So, following his lead, I have taught English in high school and college, and I even had a stint as a kindergarten teacher. When I saw the opportunity to stay home and teach my own children, I happily took it. My children are grown and I am always looking for more opportunities to share my love of English! Hi! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

In all my teaching, respect for the English language and learning how to participate in its elegance is central. I have extensive background teaching all the elements of English with learners of practically every age. My knowledge of how to approach and craft words can be adapted to fit any situation requiring excellence in language- from improving an essay to studying for the citizenship exam to writing a winning cover letter.

Grammar

Grammar is the heart of correct English. I have always loved how words fit together in the language and, for me, grammar knowledge came along with training and a lot of reading. Some people would like to know every particular of the workings of grammar, learn how to diagram sentences and carefully proofread their own work. Other people would like help with a few, particular grammar issues that may be weakening their writing or speech. I'm ready to help any person in need of grammar assistance at the level he or she would like to pursue.

Literature

Literature great and small- it all has a place in our lives. My many years of classroom teaching, education and personal reading have helped me to develop a fun and educational approach to all literature. I have taught people just learning to read to enjoy Shakespeare and people who learned to read years ago how to love Shakespeare all over again. No work of literature is beyond your reach with my help to enjoy its language, history, and meaning.

Proofreading

I know how a sentence goes together, how a paragraph should read, and how an entire MLA paper should be put together. My decades of reading, writing, and teaching will help you to check your own work for errors and fix them. I have helped some WyzAnt students receive perfect grades for their work because they turned in flawless papers, and I have helped others to secure their dream college admission or ideal job because I helped them proofread their resumes and cover letters to perfection.

Reading

Reading means many things. It means the ability to choose and contemplate ideas for yourself, it means enjoying a great book, and it means receiving valuable, sometimes life-saving information. Since reading is crucial, I can help struggling readers learn the sounds English makes, how the sounds fit together, and how grammar and style give clues to how to read. My approach is spelling-based to teach confidence in not only reading, but writing and spelling.

Study Skills

How to approach a subject is an important consideration for all students. What kind of time and attention do I need to devote to this subject? How do I go about best understanding and processing what I am learning? Can I make it fun? These questions reflect the heart of learning study skills.

I completed all my college courses with all "A"s and a few "B"s and have taught my children how to successfully complete their college courses with my methods. I can help you organize, understand and synthesize your language arts subjects- and any subjects- with careful study techniques.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is improved through concentrated study and careful, extensive reading. I have many years experience in both, skills I have passed on to my students in challenging their reading and teaching them helpful methods for improving their vocabulary. In addition to classroom activities, I have helped students prepare for standardized tests and I have helped second-language learners add to their speaking vocabulary.

Writing

With my Master's Degree in Literature and over 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have abundant qualifications. I have taught every level of education, from preschool through college.

Knowledge and patient

Brenda was very good at communicating with my 15 year-old son. I am looking forward to working with her for my son's PSAT studies. She has a strategy and a plan to move forward.
