Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST years ago when I became a teacher.
I have assisted teacher candidates with this test before.
I can assist with all sections but most people need help with the math which is my specialty.

Elementary (K-6th)

My undergrad degree in psychology is from UC San Diego and my teacher training is from UC Irvine (CA) Graduate Department of Education. The formal training was upper elementary and my student teaching was in a 4-5 combination classroom. I created a detailed unit for 5th graders on Optics, including a 3D model of the eye. They took my course once a week for 12 weeks and then took a final exam.

I also created a year-long program based on Greek Mythology for elementary-aged students. They read, reported on, and illustrated various myths based on what they learned from the Greeks. Some of their art was displayed in the school library. For extra credit, a few students made up their own myths based on the concepts used by the Greeks to explain natural phenomenon by superhuman means. They shared with the class if they so chose.

For math, I taught as hands-on as I could utilizing blocks for fractions (and food when I could get away with it), decimal pegs for metric measures, and times-tables charts since everybody was required to memorize through their twelves.

For reading I taught phonics, including making use of Hooked on Phonics and the SRA reading program. It has been around for a long time but nothing has surpassed it in quality (opinion). Handwriting was included in reading lessons instead of as a separate subject. For creative writing, I used music to inspire their writing. Editing was taught apart from the creative process so as not to interfere.

Science was another hands-on subject. We grew different plants and students kept notes on the growth patterns. Genetics was intermingled into the botany topic since it could be readily observed in plants. Beginning Physics was introduced since it is related to math; they got to see the way the physical world works and how it relies on both math and science formulas. In other words: they're real!

History and English were taught simultaneously due to the natural relationship between the 2 subjects. To help with bringing meaning to the written word, we usually put together 2 or 3 plays per year based on readings.

Students also had a spelling bee at the end of the year and there was a poetry contest for those who wished to participate.

Whenever possible I tried to teach thematically which has been shown to develop higher levels of comprehension.

SAT Math

I have had success with tutoring SAT math for high school juniors and seniors this year. I have my own materials and I provide a comprehensive review of topics covered in the new test. I also give students several practice tests so we can only focus on challenging areas. This is the most efficient way to prepare for the exam.
