I have tutored for 15 years, which includes the 11 years that I home schooled my two sons. I absolutely love math, and thoroughly enjoy tutoring the subject. Mathematics is a subject that many people need help with, because it is so different from other subjects, and is very abstract. With more explanation, and practical examples it can be understood far more clearly. In my experience many people don't understand math, because of the way they were taught. Being taught inadequately, leads to a loss of confidence, which really hampers understanding. In addition, math builds on itself constantly; so if you don't understand or miss a step along the way, it will affect your future understanding. For these reasons I have two primary objectives in tutoring math. Firstly, I will do my best to find any topics which the student is lacking, and fill in the gaps. The second is to increase their confidence, by giving them the tools to improve their understanding. It is so wonderful to observe the student understanding and increasing in confidence.
My tutoring method is to lead the student down the correct path, without doing the work for him. For example, I might ask a question which would lead him to the answer. If that is not sufficiently effective, then I will ask another question which may help in a different manner. I have found this to be a very successful strategy, because the student figures the answers out for himself. In addition, it is the best approach to use to enable him to learn and establish his confidence in the subject.
I majored in math in high school, which included studying it to the level of calculus. I furthered my math knowledge at university, where I completed a year of Pure Mathematics. I have taught math from Kindergarten (arithmetic) through high school, and at the college level. Teaching is very rewarding, and if you combine that with math, I am a very happy tutor. I enjoy spending time with my students, and building a good tutor / student relationship with them. My approach is friendly, kind, and patient. I like to have a sense of humor with my students. since it is something that everyone enjoys, and it tends to put the student at ease.
The math subjects which I tutor are Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and Trigonometry. I will tutor any age from 5 to 105 years old, as long as they can write, speak English, need help, and want help.
I am always available to anyone who wants to ask questions. If you have any questions at all, even about something that you feel is trivial, I will be happy to communicate with you through Wyzant. Communication is key, and I am happy to speak to the parents of school age children, or the older students themselves. Thank you for reading this, and considering me as a candidate for being you or your child's tutor. I would be honored to take your tutoring job.
