About Katrine

My goal is to help you discover how you learn so that you may become independently successful. I started tutoring in high school informally and have formally tutored students through several programs for all core skills from grades 7-12, as well as many introductory level college classes. I also have a strong background with college students and professionals who need to improve their writing skills. I have a strong and well rounded education which makes me an excellent tutor for a broad range of subjects, and I am more than willing to go the extra mile to ensure I am providing your child with the best support I can. I have my undergraduate degree in History, and my graduate degree in Secondary Education. During my educational tract there were several occasions in which professors asked to keep my papers for future exemplar examples. I also have my teaching certificates in both Pennsylvania and Missouri for grades 7-12 social studies, and have worked in both short and long-term substitute positions where teachers have entrusted me with their lesson plans and have requested me because I have always demonstrated strong teaching skills. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is where I began to actually understand math as a communication skill. After years of struggling with number concepts, the nature of algebra forced me to look at math from non-traditional views which enhanced my understanding. This non-traditional learning and years of tutoring have given me a unique quality in tutoring algebra, particularly for those who are not "math oriented."

American History

As a history major for my under-graduate work I was exposed to many different topics. I found that understanding where our nation has evolved from has been essential to understanding and reflecting on our political, cultural and social evolution not only in this nation, but on the world stage. I continue my education through extensive readings on current studies and events effecting our nation today.

CBEST

As a certified teacher I have been exposed to numerous testing strategies that specifically address standardized test formats such as CBEST. I myself prepared for the CBEST and scored very high on my test. I also use guided practice materials to help better structure and guide students through the CBEST preparation process.

Cooking

I have led a cooking club at an after school program for the past 9 months for grades 6-8. I have also cooked for several large events at very different locations.

Drawing

I have worked with numerous professional artists, as well as attended numerous classes specializing in different subjects matter while I attended high school and college. I am a free-lance artist myself and have had several pieces publicly displayed within the communities I live in. I have a broad knowledge on composition, shading, color use and perspective. I have also taught children as a free-lance volunteer of many different ages and skill levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Masters degree in secondary education and am a certified teacher for grades 7-12 currently. I have tutored younger children before. I have also taught many children ages 2 and up in several extracurricular activities (art, horseback riding, etc.)

Painting

My skills have been honed through private work with professional artists and college classes. I have had several pieces displayed at the schools I attended and have worked on commission before. I have helped hone the composition and color use of several students through free-lance tutoring I have done in the medium.

Political Science

Political science has a strong undercurrent within my undergraduate work, and I have had to teach basic theories of political science when I was student teaching an American Government high school class. I have also tutored several students on a volunteer basis while in college.

Proofreading

Writing for common understanding can be difficult. Due to many years of writing and editing for a variety of audiences and subjects at the college level I was able to strengthen and hone my proofreading skills. I love to share those skills with others to improve their written communication skills, which are still essential in our electronically based world.

Sewing

I have experience with cross-stitch and quilting, as well as some exposure to simple clothes design by both hand and machine stitch. I just dedicated a 10ft by 12ft quilt to a local organization which is on display.

Social Studies

Not only did I receive my undergraduate degree in history, but I am certified teacher with the state of Pennsylvania for social studies grades 7-12. I am obtaining my graduate degree in secondary education and have experience teaching American Government and Civics, U.S. History, and social study electives.

Study Skills

As a college graduate I have applied many effective study skills in many different subject areas. I also took courses in college which focused on study skills, reading skills, writing composition, and research skills. Furthermore, my graduate work is in secondary education and I have tutored test preparation and long-term study skills with high school organizations before.
