About Soraya

My name is Soraya and I'm currently an international student who just graduated from CSU Channel Islands. Starting January 20th, I will be able to start tutoring again. :)

Before CI, I attended Ventura College to get my A.A. degree. While there, I was a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader and a tutor. As an SI leader I worked with students in "basic skills" English and Statistics classes. As a tutor in the Reading and Writing Center, I taught ESL, English, and reading and writing for any college course. In the tutoring center, I tutored English, Communications, Chemistry, Statistics, Biology, Psychology, and Sociology.

I've been a tutor for three years. I love not only imparting to my students the subject material, but also helping them figure out whether they are auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners (or something else entirely). I love bringing to them a litany of methods that they could use to learn, whether it's Post-It notes (my personal favorite), index cards, flash notes, summarizing, making acronyms, or getting up and moving around. There's a method that works for everyone and I love the confidence that students gain when they experiment with what works for them. Students should walk away from their tutors and teachers knowing that they can tackle on a problem without a guide, because they have the tools required to learn on their own.

I make it to where I need to be a half an hour before I need to. If I cannot make an appointment, there is always something students can do on their own, and so I will email them a plan of what they can accomplish on their own, so that my being absent doesn't derail our long-term goals. I also tutor online through Skype so if driving is an issue, we can still do some great learning! I am never going to be a crutch for my students, and I take pride in knowing that they are capable of much more than they believe.

Please contact me if you have any questions at all!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I tutored it at the Ventura College Tutoring Center, and also tutor high school algebra.

Algebra is easier the more organized you are, and if you follow the right steps. This takes some discipline, but with practice, I can show you how to avoid common mistakes. Sometimes it’s a matter of seeing something differently, so I can show you how to draw out concepts or rewrite problems so that you actually understand what you’re looking for. Once you get these tips and tricks, you will become much more confident in taking apart a problem and following the right steps to the answer.

Don’t give up, as this is one of those subjects that you can always conquer with organization and practice!

ASVAB

My experience with ASVAB is from tutoring a friend who wanted to enlist in the Marines. He did not have a sufficient score the first time, but after working on his math and comprehension skills with me, he was able to improve his confidence. He obtained a passing score when he next took the exam.

Biology

I took Biology 101 as a required course at Ventura College. It was an easy class for me because I had already studied the same concepts in high school in Sri Lanka, and I had also covered them in more depth. I tutored Biology at Ventura College's Tutoring Center and have also tutored it privately.

This is one of my favorite subjects and I can increase your confidence in it. While this subject can be confusing at times, I find it useful to use diagrams, drawings, and other methods to remember the processes encountered. Organizing your information so as to understand the entire story can really help.

Chemistry

As an international student, I studied the British curriculum through high school in Sri Lanka. As a result, when I attended Ventura College here in California, I found the hardest Chemistry course to be extremely easy; I had already covered the material in high school in Sri Lanka. My Chemistry instructor had some brilliant methods of teaching the subject that have stuck with me even after I became an English major. This has gone towards making Chemistry a subject that I am confident tutoring and that I also love.

I can help make this sometimes confusing and frustrating subject a lot easier to handle. Chemistry is all about understanding patterns and finding the best way to remember the odd ones out. It also helps to be really organized.

I am familiar with the concepts that are covered in community college Chemistry classes, and high school Chemistry. As long as you have a textbook and know what you want to work on, I can be of invaluable help in increasing your confidence and ability to tackle Chemistry.

English

English is most definitely my first love. I just graduated from CSU Channel Islands’ English program with my B.A.

I can help you with any aspect of English – reading, writing, spelling, speaking, grammar, research, or anything else. I can explain the sometimes confusing rules of grammar, syntax, and linguistics. If you want to improve your speaking skills, we can meet and talk things out.

I can help you become a better writer, in that you will become more confident in your ability to craft a strong, coherent argument. If research papers are challenging to you, I can help you figure out how to first research effectively, then deciding how to merge research with your thoughts and ideas to write a persuasive argument. I am an honest critic of English papers and whatever you bring to me I will treat with respect and consideration for what you are trying to achieve. I will do this while still explaining what parts of it work for me as a reader, and what parts of it might need improvement.

You'll never go without clear explanations and examples of the concepts that we're dealing with. Together we can improve these and any other aspects, whether or not you are crazy about English.

Geometry

I studied Geometry in high school in Sri Lanka, and I also tutored it at the Ventura College Tutoring Center. I can teach you the organization and methods that can help you problem-solve with more confidence.

Grammar

I learned English by hearing it spoken around me, writing in English, and, most importantly, reading English. My knowledge of the rules of English grammar are exemplary, and I can usually catch any mistakes that are made in a piece of writing just by reading it. Sometimes sentences just sound wrong, and, most of the time, it's because they are. So if you would like to learn how to proofread a paper and know more about semi colons, commas, and ellipses, please do not hesitate to ask me. When it comes to learning the fundamental rules of English grammar, I might not know all the terms that are used to describe all the different parts of English grammar, but I can certainly use a textbook to refresh my memory before explaining it to you with a clear example. I know that I will be able to help you understand and put into practice what you're learning.

GRE

I took the GRE in October 2015, and earned a 160 on Quantitative Reasoning, 164 on Verbal Reasoning, and 5.5 on Analytical Writing.

As an applicant to English Ph.D. programs, I chose to focus my energy on Verbal and Writing. I enrolled in a six-week GRE prep course at CSU Channel Islands, and so I learned how to tackle each of the sections. Whether or not you consider yourself a “Math” or “English” person matters little when it comes to the GRE. It matters more that you engage with the proper test-taking methods. With some tutoring and practice, you will be able to improve your confidence in the right methods and mindset to conquer the GRE.

IELTS

I am an English major and have tutored international students who are required to take the test in order to obtain required scores to apply to graduate institutions in the US. The IELTS is a test of English, and with the same learning methods that can be applied for other standardized tests (flash vocabulary cards, reading practice, writing formulas, conversing in English), the test can be taken on with a great degree of confidence.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used MS Outlook for over three years in my position as an Undergraduate Student Assistant at International Programs in CSU Channel Islands. I know its workings extensively, and I know how to research it if I don't know something about it.

Prealgebra

Reading

As an English lover, I love reading. I love reading even when it comes to textbooks. But even I have to admit that some textbooks are just difficult to grasp. The trick is to figure out methods of reading and understanding that work best for you. Some people like making their own notes after reading, others like summarizing. I'm more of a Post-It notes kind of reader. I know others who love index cards. Whatever troubles you are having with reading, I can assure you that together we can find what works for you so that you can go through life enjoying the benefits of reading.

Sociology

I took two Sociology classes in Ventura College and got rave reviews and a recommendation from the instructor. I can provide the recommendation and my transcripts if needed. The non-traditional English program at CSU Channel Islands also focuses greatly on social awareness and activism. This means that I am well-versed in issues of gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, politics, power, and difference, that we often come across in Sociology.

Statistics

Statistics tends to be one of those subjects that carries a stigma about being incredibly difficult. I understand that, sometimes, it’s hard to figure out what you’re looking for in a problem, or what standard deviation is even after you’ve found it, or even what any of the numbers that you've calculated mean. But this isn’t what makes Statistics hard. What makes it hard is that often we go into a Statistics problem not truly understanding what we’re attempting to do.

My love of English and Statistics work well at this point. I can help you understand the word problems that are so important in this subject. Statistics makes sense once you know what the fancy words mean. Then, it’s a matter of organizing your information well, and following careful steps to the answer.

I took Statistics in high school in Sri Lanka, and I also took it here at Ventura College. I loved the class and understood it well. I tutored Statistics at the Ventura College Tutoring Center and I was also a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Statistics over the summer. During this time, I met large groups of my students outside of class to tackle their Statistics problems together. I know where students tend to get stuck, and I can help you out!

Email me with any questions and I will be happy to help you out.

Study Skills

As a Supplemental Instruction Leader at Ventura College, I took part in weekly training sessions that focused on study skills to improve grades and retention in "basic skills" courses. I still have all my training materials from my time as an SI Leader and refer to these often as I tutor.

Writing

I just graduated from CSU Channel Islands’ English program with my B.A. I have spent the last four years writing extensively to create different kinds of papers – research papers, creative projects, a thesis paper, collaborative papers, a short story, and more.

The long and, to many people, frustrating, process of writing is one I know and love like a close friend. I know where students get stuck, I know where they make the common mistakes, I know when they feel like giving up, and I know how to get around all of it. I know because I've been there and I know how to help students get out onto paper the ideas they have in their head. And trust me, the ideas are there; it's just a matter of figuring out how to say it best.

Soraya Rocks! — I wanted to submit this review of my tutor Soraya. In just one week she has increased my knowledge and understanding of college algebra ten fold! She has been patient with me and helped me to work through some tough algebra problems and theories. I would recommend her to anyone that is having problems with this subject. (P.S. She's mine until the end of this term!) All joking aside, she gets hi ...
