About Pam

I've been teaching for over ten years. I have taught English and all levels of ESL (english as a second language) reading, writing, listening, speaking, accent reduction and pronunciation classes. I received my teaching credential through California State University - Northridge.

I focus on using some of these tools to teach my students such as: video, film, quizzes, games and comics in order to learn English in context and quickly.

I enjoy learning about new cultures and really enjoy watching a student grasp a new concept!
I try to make learning interesting and fun for both the learner and myself, as I think this is really important.
I hope I can assist you on your educational journey. I'm happy to answer any questions, just contact me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

As a community service I teach the bible to many people of all ages. Whether they have some knowledge or are just starting out, I have been studying the bible for ove 20 years and have been successful in helping others to learn to read and apply God's word in their own life to benefit from it fully. I am knowledgable about the characters and the theme of the bible as well as the principles it teaches inorder to help oneself be a better person. The historical and modern day infomation is very interesting and real when related to our day. I belive I can assist those who have an interest in learning more about this subject.

Career Development

I've assisted my ESL student to navigate the higher education experience and showed them many career opportunities in and outside the class over time that has helped them to acquire work right away while studying as well as gain confidence and feel successful.

CBEST

I am an ESL teacher and have had to take this test to work at an Adult Ed school, so I have first hand experience. I understand how to portion out the time to get passing results. I know what the test takers are looking for in the essay and how to tactically approach the math and reading sections to get the highest scores.

Cosmetology

I have been a cosmetologist since 1991, although I let my license go a few years ago I keep up on current practices. I have a working knowledge and access to state board material and practices in order to assist students with test taking needs.

Phonics

I have been working as a literacy tutor for over ten years with READ Ventura. I show students from the beginning sounds of the alphabet and identifying letters to word families and beyond. It takes awhile for students to grasp the ideas and concepts in English because, like many other languages, we don't have a one sound/one letter rule. However, with some basic rules and practice they can identify and learn and build until they can form the proper sound/letter combinations and begin reading. It's truly a joy on my part to see them accomplish such a feat at time in advanced years.

Public Speaking

I work for the local college where I live and have given several presentations in workshops to my peers. I have also presented at conferences through CATESOL. I'm a literacy tutor and for fundraising events have had to present to potential donors. I feel this experience along with classes in public speaking qualify me to assist student in these matters.

Speech

I have studied linguistics and different facets of langage in order to understand the basic mechanics of pronunciationa and accent reddution. I understand the places where people of different cultures may have potential articulation problems. I can help them due to my 10+ experience in working with international students. I possess an MA in TESOL and a TESL certifcate. I also have a background in literacy which helps a great deal in the basic fundamentals of phonics.

Study Skills

I help my Literacy, English and ESL students with basic study skills and knowing how to balance homework and all. I find it best to try to teach a little organizational skills first then move on to prioritize things as far as importance and giving them a calendar and a timer to use is essential. I find it works best to do these things first then move on to specifics. I guide them through the journey till they understand and can manage then check in with them periodically.

Knowledgeable, patient, understanding, intuitive, caring, fun

Pam asked us why we wanted to learn Spanish, and then she tailored our first class around that. We love that she is calm, mature and patient with adult students like us. We appreciate her sense of humour which made the lesson relaxed and fun. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I anticipate the lessons will get even better as we go along so I'm leaving room for that.
