I chose teaching after successfully tutoring my own nieces and nephews when they arrived in the United States after being in a Missionary Family being home schooled. 5 of them went successfully through Junior College and then on to Honors at Berkley, UCLA, Cal Arts and San Diego University. During this time I was in Graduate School training to become a Community College Teacher and have received the California Certified Teacher Certificate.
My motivation comes from the love of young people and assisting them in succeeding in life. Each student is a treasure in their own way and must be treated and educated to their needs and personal potential. I assist parents with understanding this and working together we create an atmosphere of challenge, learning and success. I believe in one on one communication and creating a world of wonder and curiosity in completing the courses required. I work as a partner and a team mate and believe everyone is brilliant in their own way.
My extensive background in English Literature provides a unique story telling ability to get students interested in the authors and books required for their studies. I write short stories and plays and have been known to my younger classmates in graduate school as cutting edge. I am a Method Actor and use my acting skills to assist students in the confidence they need in speaking and communicating their thoughts to people and on paper with ease and grace.
Grammar and vocabulary is what helps us work in the world and gives the first impression in school, with new friends and on the job. We all feel uncomfortable without these skills and the more we practice the happier we are with ourselves. I allow students to practice with me prior to going out into a complicated world.
I look forward to working with students who are going through challenges and prior to working together as Tutor and Student we can figure out together a study process that will produce results in a proper time frame. My unique way of teaching through storytelling assists students in their reading and writing process which helps in every area of their studies. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Certified California Community College teacher I am trained to speak in front of large classes of students. In addition, I have received the Pinnacle Award in Public Relations from the Public Relations Society of America for my Public Speaking. I have made verbal presentations to all Five Armed Forces at the Pentagon and also have had my own Radio Show and appeared as a TV Newscaster in New York.
