I am a versatile and published writer with lots of teaching experience. My background includes a degree in English and Creative Writing, as well as a recent second career as a therapist. I am also the mother of a teenager who knows exactly how stressful it can be to get your assignments done and to apply for college. Having graduated from UC Santa Cruz (a proud Banana Slug) and with two graduate degrees, I can help both students and parents to prepare for college. And because I'm a poet, as well as a therapist, I can be supportive, insightful, firm, concise, and non-judgmental as a tutor.
I've taught Literacy and Language Arts, Creative Writing, and worked with kids and adults of all ages and skill levels.
What's most important to me as a tutor is to help my students to find their own voices and to ease their stress. Writing is an amazing creative outlet and a powerful communicative tool. It shouldn't be something you fear or dread, or feel insecure about. To be a good writer, all you need is the right kind of guidance, support, and a few basic tools. I will help you to shape and polish your words without too much stress so that you can go on to be the best writer possible.
I have a Master's Degree in English and Creative Writing from the well-respected writing program at SFSU.
I'm a published author, with my poetry and other works in various literary journals and magazines.
I taught Editing and Creative Writing to Undergraduate and Graduate students and have worked as a Literacy Tutor.
My daughter just finished taking the SATs, so I know how stressful that can be. My score in English was 740.
Please contact me with anything that you might be working on or feeling stressed about. No assignment is too long or too short. I'm happy to schedule time to work with you on whatever you need and to figure out a tutoring schedule with you.
Some projects require more than one session, so we will sit down together and evaluate your needs during my first visit.
I'm available during the week and on some weekends. My focus is on helping you to become a great writer, with the least amount of stress and in the shortest amount of time. Carpe Diem! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My Bachelor's degree is in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Wildlife Biology. I studied Invertebrate Zoology, Marine Biology and many other courses.
I have independently studied and taught aspects of biology, zoology and ecology to students at the Tiburon Audubon Society as a Naturalist and at the Point Bonita YMCA Outdoor Education Program, in the GGNRA.
I spent two summers doing field work and research on whales, grizzly bears, birds and other native Alaskan wildlife in McCarthy Wrangell National Park and in southeast Alaska, as a student at SFSU Extension.
