About Dominic

I've always had a natural inclination for mathematics, and enjoyed the experience of helping others to understand the concepts involved. As a UC student studying physics, I tutored classmates for pizza money, and have since helped three baby brothers and a handful of family friends through their middle and high school math and science classes - the oldest of whom is now attending Berkeley.

My goal when tutoring is always to nourish the intuitive feeling for numbers that can make the subject 'click' and truly make sense, instead of being the arbitrary collection of rules and procedures that people often seem to struggle with. I want to encourage a numeracy that will help a child succeed not just in their current class, but in all their mathematical subjects in the future. To this end, I encourage students to think actively about the meaning of a problem and roughly estimate the answer they'd expect, where possible, as well as guiding them gradually through the steps of a solution to demonstrate the ways in which what we know can flow naturally into what we need.

My preferred approach is to begin with the recent material that is giving the student trouble and use it to step backwards, identifying any weak points in previously-learned subjects and techniques which can be reinforced. Patience and positivity, I feel confident to say, are my strong suits - I always maintain a encouraging attitude, and never judge a student for how long it takes them. After all, if they found it easy, I wouldn't be there. For me, the biggest payoff of tutoring is the moment when the student 'gets it,' when the metaphorical light bulb turns on and what had once been impenetrable becomes straightforward.

As for my specific qualifications and thoughts on tutoring math - my SAT Math score was 798. My GRE quantitative score was 770 (old scale, obviously). I received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test, way back when. My entire academic experience was heavily immersed in math; physics is essentially using the pure language of mathematics to speak on a deep level about the functioning of the natural world.

As to physics - my Bachelor's degree is in physics, and I received a 750 on the Physics GRE. I received a 5 on the AP Physics test, way back when. As Earnest Rutherford said, all science is either physics or stamp collecting - I was drawn to the subject because it is uniquely able to speak about the nature and behavior of the world in a rigorously numerical, predictable sense. It brings the promise of absolute accuracy and truth from the abstract world of mathematics into the concrete everyday we inhabit, and on a good day, I can help a student appreciate the power that this implies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great guy and easily the best tutor I have ever had. — Dominic is the best tutor I have ever had in my life. That is saying something because I have had over 20 tutors thus far in my lifetime. He makes Statistics easy to understand and puts all of the concepts into real life applicable situations so you learn easily. He is very easy to communicate with. I remember I called him one time at 3:00 am and he picked up. (not saying you should do this just s ...
