I've always had a natural inclination for mathematics, and enjoyed the experience of helping others to understand the concepts involved. As a UC student studying physics, I tutored classmates for pizza money, and have since helped three baby brothers and a handful of family friends through their middle and high school math and science classes - the oldest of whom is now attending Berkeley.
My goal when tutoring is always to nourish the intuitive feeling for numbers that can make the subject 'click' and truly make sense, instead of being the arbitrary collection of rules and procedures that people often seem to struggle with. I want to encourage a numeracy that will help a child succeed not just in their current class, but in all their mathematical subjects in the future. To this end, I encourage students to think actively about the meaning of a problem and roughly estimate the answer they'd expect, where possible, as well as guiding them gradually through the steps of a solution to demonstrate the ways in which what we know can flow naturally into what we need.
My preferred approach is to begin with the recent material that is giving the student trouble and use it to step backwards, identifying any weak points in previously-learned subjects and techniques which can be reinforced. Patience and positivity, I feel confident to say, are my strong suits - I always maintain a encouraging attitude, and never judge a student for how long it takes them. After all, if they found it easy, I wouldn't be there. For me, the biggest payoff of tutoring is the moment when the student 'gets it,' when the metaphorical light bulb turns on and what had once been impenetrable becomes straightforward.
As for my specific qualifications and thoughts on tutoring math - my SAT Math score was 798. My GRE quantitative score was 770 (old scale, obviously). I received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test, way back when. My entire academic experience was heavily immersed in math; physics is essentially using the pure language of mathematics to speak on a deep level about the functioning of the natural world.
As to physics - my Bachelor's degree is in physics, and I received a 750 on the Physics GRE. I received a 5 on the AP Physics test, way back when. As Earnest Rutherford said, all science is either physics or stamp collecting - I was drawn to the subject because it is uniquely able to speak about the nature and behavior of the world in a rigorously numerical, predictable sense. It brings the promise of absolute accuracy and truth from the abstract world of mathematics into the concrete everyday we inhabit, and on a good day, I can help a student appreciate the power that this implies. I've always had a natural inclination for mathematics, and enjoyed the experience of helping others to understand the concepts involved. Dominic is the best tutor I have ever had in my life. That is saying something because I have had over 20 tutors thus far in my lifetime. He makes Statistics easy to understand and puts all of the concepts into real life applicable situations so you learn easily. He is very easy to communicate with. I remember I called him one time at 3:00 am and he picked up. (not saying you should do this just saying that he is very easy to reach and very tentative to helping in anyway he can.)
After two weeks of being tutored by Dominic, I went from getting a 60% on exams to getting 90% on the next and so on. That is how good this guy is.
Honestly, this tutor was fun as well. He made it so I didn't get bored while being tutored and he also made it so I felt comfortable asking questions and not feeling like bad for doing so. He is also very patient and just an all around genuine and great guy! He wants to help, so let him! You wont regret it.
Dominic was extremely adept at teaching AP calculus. My daughter was thrilled with the understanding of the material and very prepared for her test.
Highly recommended. We had a tutor on Saturday who couldn't figure out my son's tenth grade math. Dominic came in on Sunday and saved the day!
Knew the physics material inside and out and was able to communicate it effectively to my son. He is working on the SAT Physics Subject and Math 2 tests and Dominic not only knows the material but is able to effectively communicate the material for Jeremiah to understand. Thank you Dominic!
Very pleased with Dominic as a tutor. He responded very quickly to my request and was available the same day. Extremely patient and knowledgeable.
We have used Dominic several times to tutor our HS son in Algebra 2. Dominic is very patient and competent and our son, who did not want a tutor actually responds well to Dominic and they accomplish a lot with each session.
Dominic is a phenomenal tutor with great communication skills. He has been helping me tackle material for my college level Intro to Statistics course. Dominic uses a variety of teaching strategies to make learning new mathematical concepts simple and enjoyable.
Dominic is an amazing tutor! I had a special set of circumstances, in which I had to recieve a good grade in Physics in order to attend a graduate program. Without Dominic, I'm not sure I would have been able to accomplish my goal on my own. He is a punctual guy even when his mode of transportation broke down. He explained everything conceptually, which made the mathematical process easier to understand. Dominic made sure every concept/problem we accomplished in our sessions, I knew very well before he left. He is very patient and is capable of explaining concepts thoroughly in a variety of different ways.
Overall, Dominic is a great guy and an incredible tutor! I highly recommend him!
Dominic is very patient and flexible. He makes sure you are comfortable with the topics. When my son started with Dominic, he was lost. By the time he took his final, he understood the material.
Dominic S. helped me understand the questions being asked. He didn't just throw formulas at me. Very knowledgeable in every aspect of physics. I am definitely going to work with him in my next math courses
Dominic helped my son understand algebraic equations and gain confidence after a semester long struggle with this subject. His grade went from a low C to a B in just two months! Great tutor!
He's helping me shake off a LOT of rust. He's very nice and patient, which I appreciate. He's great at explaining thing as well.
Dominic has a lot of patience and is very knowledgeable. I'd recommend him to everyone. He really knows his subjects & he's diligent about making sure you are comfortable with the subject. Thanks Dominic, see you soon.
Helped me very much on my pre-calculus subjects, knew exactly what he was talking about and explained the material very well.
Thanks Dominic, Shane got a lot out of the one lesson and feels confident in knowing what is going on now. Thank you.
Was able to explain the concepts in a clear manner that translated over to the problems I needed help with well. Went step by step explaining each point in the process exquisitely while making sure I understood where things came from.
After only a few sessions, my son went from a C to an A in his demanding honors level class. He has a renewed confidence propelling him to keep achieving at a high level.
Dominic helped my son who is a sophomore in HS in a algebra 2 honors class. He had been struggling a lot. He had his first tutoring session with Dominic and ended up doing the best on a quiz that he's done all year!!! You can only imagine how accomplished my son feels. We have had other tutors and nobody has helped him like Dominic has. We highly recommend him and are grateful to have him helping us now too!
I had to take physics for the first time in my college career and was in desperate trouble. I was also enrolled in a biomechanics course which happens to be almost all physics. After a couple weeks of school I realized I was falling behind and found Dominic on Wyzant. We started asap and he tutored me twice a week for the remainder of the semester. He was very good at teaching me the fundamentals so that the more complicated problems did not seem as intimidating. He was also very adept at the biomechanics problems even though he's never taken the course. His proficiency in physics really showed. I ended up doing much better in my classes than I anticipated and better yet actually learned the material. Highly recommend Dominic if you are looking for a physics tutor.
Great tutor Dominic! My daughter was able to understand some of the concepts she had difficulty with. Thank you!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
