I've been a professional writer (mainstream and trade publications, corporations) for over 25 years. Though much of my career has been as a freelancer, I have also been a writer for the United Nations Department of Public Information, UNESCO in Paris, and two research centers at UCLA.
I also have an interest in sharing my love of reading, critical thinking, and writing with teens. I was a Big Sister to a young girl (12 when we started) from difficult circumstances; she is now 25 and we're still friends. Three years ago, I created a sophomore writing curriculum for the Los Angeles chapter of an organization devoted to helping bright young people from disadvantage backgrounds improve their skills and gain entrance to a 4-year college. I found the experience of working with these young people so delightful that I want to continue to encourage young people to read, think and write more clearly.
Success in working with a teenager begins in meeting that young person where they are, learning about their obstacles to good communication, and working to improve those areas. There is no "one size fits all." I am dedicated to encourage deeper, more critical thinking and learning how to put those ideas on the page. Let me say first that I know a lot about human spirituality and it matters to me a lot that I only meet with positive people who feel the joy in their lives. It is very important of course for the tutor to be knowledgeable. Otherwise no one would hire her or him. BUT knowledge would not be connived or received unless both parties are positive. In tutorial session the hard part is to be on the sender: the tutor.
Debra was great. Although she spent about 20 minutes looking for a parking it was about 32 centigrade in Manhattan Beach (I was in the café enjoying the coffee and the book and the coolness of the place) she was smiling positive and joyful.
Then she helped me in outlining the essay. We were discussing the material as if we are good friends that know each other for a good period of time and not that we have just met.
She gave me titles of books as references for writing that are really helpful. She gave me many useful suggestions and advice that for sure would enrich me in my career as a writer.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. As a profession, I am a journalist and have honed my own "study skills" to enable me to report, research and write up to ten articles a week.
