About Jennifer

Everyone has a unique learning style because each person has her own unique experiences, abilities and challenges. This is always what I have kept in mind over my ten years of participating as a teacher in the learning process. Tailoring a learning plan to an individual is what makes one-on-one learning advantageous; a specific set of goals can be accomplished much more easily if the method and mode used to arrive there is geared toward a real and multifaceted person’s needs. Being aware and sensitive toward what is working for a student is paramount. This is my strength as a tutor— establishing a path that will get us to set goals by helping the student to learn to use the unique qualities they have to thrive.

Learning and teaching creatively is important because it can instill a love of what is studied, but also because it is an engaging pathway to achieving goals. Working creatively is another way to work thoughtfully and diligently. As a tutor, I will lay out a course of action so there will always be a clear idea of what needs to get done and when. This includes discussion, homework, and other unique assignments. Creativity and flexibility inside a clear structure will help us move along toward the goals set.

I have been in love with reading and writing since I was young, and have always wanted to help others experience the kind of joy I feel when connecting with a fantastic book, understanding an article, or being swept away by a short story.

In community college, I published my short stories, and as an university undergraduate, I tutored students at my school who needed some extra help on writing assignments for art history, contemporary culture, and English composition classes.

Earning my MA in Critical Theory sharpened my ability to communicate complex ideas in groups, process reading material quickly and write concisely. I have reached my own academic goals by being open to a combination of both traditional modes of working and creative solutions that have their own unique paths. I want to help people meet their academic goals and feel confident to speak on the topics they are covering in class. To accomplish that, I have found that being aware and sensitive in regard to what is working for a student is paramount.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have drawn and painted from a young age, and am passionate about sharing my skills and learning about art from others. Technique and and theory have always been interesting to me, and that is what I focus on as an instructor. I have given figurative drawing demos for life drawing with charcoal and pencil, and fashion design drawing with ink and marker. I have done storyboards for student films, and have drawn portraits. I studied as an undergraduate in the painting program at the San Francisco Art Institute and exhibited work in galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and England. I was selected and participated in a Summer study abroad program at Oxford's Ruskin school of art and exhibited drawing there along with other students from the US and the UK.
