About Arlene

We learn from and teach each other every day in a variety of ways. Sometimes the subject matter is a specific academic or business matter, other times the subject matter is simply to improve life circumstances. While knowledge of the specific subject is important, knowing how to deliver that information is equally important. Every person learns differently. My earlier careers included teaching English to junior high and high school students. Subsequently, I taught teaching word processing classes to Continuing Education adults. My teaching abilities evolved into teaching current clients successful methods of training their puppies and dogs. Each teaching situation was and is unique.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and subsequently attended Boston University and Harvard University for additional English, mathematics, and natural science courses. I later graduated from National K-9 School for Dog Trainers as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer.

I am a retired Technical Writer/Editor who offers 20+ years of experience after working with a Massachusetts defense contractor company and in California law enforcement. Both careers required excellent knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, syntax, and required the ability to prepare and deliver excellent documentation of all types. I now share my knowledge of English with students of all ages as they prepare both academically in school and for the business world.

Students learn best in a quiet comfortable atmosphere. I offer private classes in your home or at the local library. I am happy to consider other alternative locations depending on the situation. If students study together, I am happy to consider that arrangement also.

I always appreciate a 24-hour cancellation notice, but I realize that sometimes that is not possible and do request a 4-hour cancellation notice. If any student misses a class, I try to offer makeup classes at a mutually convenient time.

I look forward to hearing from you so that we can begin your road to success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Everyone learns differently so every lesson is geared to each individual.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts and subsequently attended Boston University and Harvard University for courses in English, mathematics, and natural science. I have taught English to both junior high and high school students, and word processing courses to Continuing Education adults. I have 20+ years experience as a technical writer/editor and report writer.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and helping you improve your English skills in grammar, proofreading, reading, spelling, writing, and syntax.

Grammar

While daily conversations contain accepted street language and no one seems to care "how" sentences are structured, the written word has a different approach ... each sentence requires a specific structure to build, describe, and communicate an idea correctly. Each sentence becomes its own painting. To complete that painting effectively requires using correct grammar - or, learning the art of placing the right words in the right place at the right time. Once a student understands the rules, the picture is painted easily.

Reading

We talk to each other every day and share ideas verbally. Sometimes, though, students have difficulty understanding those same ideas when required to understand them by reading them. Sometimes, the visual word presents such a challenge that students read less and less - which is so sad because reading opens so very many doors.

Reading with ease allows you to understand instructions, to learn new skills, or just relax and enjoy the story of a book.

There is nothing magical about reading easily. Reading is just the art of taking one step at a time. Start slowly and build on each step.

Spelling

We speak to each other on a daily basis and understand what is being said. Now, imagine that we actually "see" each spoken word with our minds, that we visualize each word. Then, take each visualized word and put it on paper. Now the challenge is to know how to spell each word ... a challenge which is actually like preparing a recipe: once you know the ingredients, you are able to prepare the meal.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and helping you improve your English spelling skills.

Writing

When students have difficulty writing, they often write less and less. Instead, the trick is to write more! We speak to each other all the time. Writing is simply putting our ability to speak on paper. To write effectively takes some concentration and effort, but the steps to success are so very easy once you learn how!
