Montclair State University (Music Education)
As a young percussionist interested primarily in marching band and concert band, I remember having a difficult time finding private instruction in those specific styles. That is why I want to provide that service: to give other students the help that I was unable to get.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Montclair State University, one of the foremost schools for education in New Jersey, graduating in 2010. While there, I studied classical percussion privately, and performed in the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony, playing some of the most challenging literature for the medium. I was also a member of the world champion Raiders Drum & Bugle Corps of Wayne, NJ between the years of 2003 and 2007.
I started teaching while I was still studying and performing, teaching drumline for one season at West Morris Central High School in Chester, NJ, and four years at West Essex High School in North Caldwell, NJ. Since moving to California, I have started teaching the percussion section at a local high school.
I am available to give lessons in classical percussion, namely snare drum and mallets, as well as marching drums (snare, tenor, bass), or mallets. If you have never played before and want to learn from the beginning, the way I teach is centered around strong fundamentals to ensure a long and fulfilling life in music. I can also hone more advanced techniques to prepare students for auditions, either for honors bands/orchestras, college music programs, or drum corps. Outside of percussion I am able to provide lessons in basic music reading, or high school/college level music theory.
As I am based in Vallejo, I want keep to the East Bay, preferably Solano County, but I am willing to go into Contra Costa County. I have a 3 hour cancellation policy, and am charging $50 an hour.
I look forward to hearing from you, and cannot wait to help you explore music! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
