Hello! My name is David and helping students succeed in school is my passion.

My tutoring career began in 2011 as a volunteer for Reading Partners, a non-profit organization that provided tutoring for students struggling with reading comprehension. I later applied as a writing tutor for CSU East Bay's Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA) and helped college students from many social and ethnic backgrounds polish their essays. After graduating in 2012 with a B.A. in English, I became an independent contractor and tutored high school students around the San Francisco Bay Area.

I earned my teaching credential in 2015 from Humboldt State University and have experience teaching English to middle and high school students. I have had the pleasure of working with students of different backgrounds and ages throughout my teaching career. I would be thrilled to use my extensive experience to help you or your child improve their reading and writing skills.

I teach students how to be comfortable with the writing process, how to carefully read and analyze a text, and how to think critically about important issues. These are not skills reserved for the 1%. Everyone can read well and write well if they have proper tutoring. I do my best to provide patient, punctual, and rigorous English tutoring for all of my students.

I currently provide one-on-one, online English tutoring for children in grades 6-12. If you are a college student who is struggling with an essay, then I can provide you with editing and proofreading services. Hope to speak with you soon!

Public Speaking

In college I took public speaking courses and participated in a speech competition, but my skills were sharpened during my time as a substitute teacher for the Benicia Unified School District. As a sub, I had to give directions and provide leadership for each class. I learned how to project my voice, speak in a clear manner, and make eye contact so that the teacher's lesson plan would be followed.

Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

I have the training and expertise needed to teach grammar to K-12 students and adults. For example, my Bachelor's degree in English from Cal State East Bay in Hayward required rigorous courses in modern English grammar and I attended Humboldt State for my English teaching credential. I can teach and reinforce concepts of grammar, such as relative pronouns, superlative adjectives, and modal auxiliary verbs.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

I possess a BA in English with a minor in Creative Writing from Cal State East Bay. I have been teaching the writing process to high school and college students for several years now and have an eye for detail in proofreading essays. I will use my experiences to help you polish your academic paper until it shines with clear and cogent prose.

Fantastic English and Writing Tutor

I would like to start by saying that in the 8 month time period that I worked with David, my writing skills, writing knowledge, and reading comprehension each got exponentially better. David is always excited to help you out with schoolwork and other assignments but never will do it for you, which leads to a constructive way of learning. He also has numerous resource sheets that contain valuable information about vocabulary, essay writing, and many more subtopics related to writing. Using these skills, we could see how I improved because every session we would do a quick-write activity, and I would receive constructive feedback on how to write better. Lastly, the activities were not boring, because many of these activities stemmed from books we would read together and in my case, we read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. Every two sessions, we would read and discuss a chapter of the book, followed by a writing prompt about the chapter we read. In conclusion, I really liked the way the class was taught, and it worked out well for me because my English skills have improved.

Excellent writing tutoring

David has been tutoring my 11 years old for about 9 month now. I have observed big improvement. She doesn’t struggle as much for ideas or content. She is more confident in writing. David is very patient, positive and knowledge of many subjects. He is incredible guiding how to crafting stories. He brings out the best in her. Definitely recommend him!

Great tutor working with my reluctant writer

David has done a great job working with my reluctant 5th grade writer. My son's school does not do a lot of writing (even at 5th grade) and has spent virtually no time studying grammar in the past two years. (Yes, I'm frustrated.) Trying to get him set over the summer so he can transition more easily to a new school. My son looks forward to his lessons and is making progress. Couldn't ask for more.

Amazing tutor

We were very lucky to find David to tutor my 11 years old son for his English writing. He is very knowledgeable and patient. My son starts getting more confidence in his writing skills, and I noticed his writing improvement. David teaches my son writing skills, grammar, and reading. He is a great tutor. We will continue to use him to help my son. Thank you David for your expertise and help!

knowledgeable and patient

David has been tutoring English to my 9th grade son since August. My son never had an English tutor in the past. When the 9th grade began, the required readings and assignments became tougher than those in the middle school. David knows all the materials - The Odyssey, McBeth, etc- well and helps my son to understand better, and helps him brainstorm, formulate and create writing by discussion, and giving feedback and suggestions, making the lesson engaging and helpful. My son is willing to put hard work but the chemistry/relationship is important because the tutor must know how to talk with a teenage boy who is not readily expressive to everyone because of his age, but who can excel with the right kind of encouragement. He is respectful of my son's opinions and thoughts but at the same time provides the and always makes sure the lesson is there for him to succeed at school.
