About Nicholas

Hello! My name is Nick S. I'm presently a graduate student earning two masters degrees concurrently. I'm looking to tutor not only to make a little extra money, but to get some more experience working with students, which is what I hope to do for my career.

My experience with tutoring and teaching is quite varied, from helping adults at a homeless shelter with basic reading and math skills, to giving both 8th graders and graduate students religious and theological instruction--I can work with people at most any age or skill level. My undergraduate education in Communication Studies has given me strong skills in reading comprehension, writing, and public speaking; my graduate education in philosophy and theology has given me skills in logical thinking and clear argumentation, always useful when preparing essays. I scored very well in the verbal and writing sections of the SAT and GRE, so I can be of help in preparing for those.

As to my approach and method in tutoring: first and foremost, I have an easy-going personality and am very patient with students. Everything flows from that. If someone doesn't get an idea or concept the first time around, I try to find a new way of explaining it, an analogy or comparison that will make things clearer; my goal is to get the student to that "aha!" moment when the light bulb clicks on and they now understand for themselves.

Thank you for considering me! I would love to work with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I took two courses in public speaking as an undergraduate and had an A in both. I also worked for the university as a "speech assistant," helping other students to write and prepare speeches for classes. I have continued using these skills in a variety of ways, from addressing church congregations to giving a student lecture at my graduate school.

Religion

I am currently a graduate student in Catholic theology, but am familiar with the theological thought of many Christian denominations, as well as with some of the world's other major religions. I would be most comfortable tutoring in Christian theology, most especially Catholic.
