I am a talented educator with 25 years experience teaching K-7 students in public schools, with 12 of those years teaching Special Needs children grades K-5. I love teaching math as much as I do teaching reading! I know how to re-teach missing skills, break problems into manageable parts, and show easy ways to add, subtract, multiply or divide without memorization. I have successfully taught Re-grouping, Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Long Division, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Word Problems. My students love math, and excel in it.
In regards to Special Needs students, I daily teach students with ADHD, learning disabilities, language processing difficulties, emotionally disturbance, and children on the Autism Spectrum. Most students find me patient, sensitive, caring, and fun! I help all students experience success and build their self-confidence as learners. Many a child has turned around their self-esteem as a result of mastering previously challenging skills.
I teach because I love children, and thoroughly enjoy helping them be ever more successful in school. My students' grades improve, and their test scores improve; frequently dramatically so. I have great rapport with kids, and motivate them to try their best and work hard. I get the most out of children, as I can tell when they are getting fatigued or frustrated, and switch my approach or the activity. I give them tons of encouragement and recognition; we celebrate success with each other and with parents. I thoroughly believe a child can achieve because I have seen child after child break through. I have helped students who were getting D's and F's get A's, and raised test scores from Below Basic to Proficient or Advanced. This happens because we're in it together, and the journey is fun!
Tutoring sessions are customized to the needs of the child/wishes of the parent. I informally assess all students, and can administer standardized academic tests if desired. I can assist with homework of any kind, and always come prepared to teach needed skills. I tailor lessons to the level that students are challenged but successful, and focus on areas that need development. I have access to the best curriculum I have found through years of trial and experience. Learning games are frequently employed for skill practice. I am always on the lookout to improve my methods and broaden my repertoire of teaching strategies. I try to motivate my students to do extra practice beyond the tutoring session or their Homework. I care passionately about the success of each child and have faith in their ability to learn. I come to work excited each day.
I love parents nearly as much as children. I always provide tips and materials for parents to work with their child if they're inclined, or take away the Homework Hassles that sometimes come with parenting.

For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. I had a very tough top-notch high school English teacher who taught me everything I know about grammar and writing. I took Advanced Placement English 1 from her and got A's that I had to really work for. When I went to college and graduate school, we had to write one or more papers and term papers for nearly all the subjects except math, science, and P.E. Due to the outstanding teaching that my high school teacher, Mrs. Mariner, so generously gave me, I received an A grade on every paper I wrote in college. Today I teach grammar and writing to K-5th grade students at a California Distinguished School.

Reading was my first love when I was a child, and I promised myself (and kept it) that I would read a book a day or more everyday of my life
This practice ended in about 8th grade, when all my books were several hundred pages long. I remained a voracious reader throughout my college years. I always excelled at reading comprehension, and always scored in the top 1% on standardized tests, all the way through the GRE. As I have years and years of graduate school coursework on teaching reading, and teaching reading to dyslexic/learning disabled students, I am truly an experienced expert in this area, with 25 years of experience under my belt. In 25 years, I have only encountered one student who had such severe dyslexia that he simply could not read whole words after numerous approaches had been tried. I recommended a rare specialized form of reading instruction to his family, that could only be done by certified instructors of that method from a private institution.The parents pursued it, got the school district to pay for it, and that child learned rudimentary reading at age 12.I also got Special Ed to buy a tool that converted print into speech, and textbooks on tape for this child. Other than that, hundreds of my students have been successful in decoding and comprehending reading. with my help. I feel highly confident that I can successfully meet or exceed your expectations in this domain. Helping a child learn to read their first words is especially thrilling to me. (I taught first grade for 7 years.)

Both of my parents were teachers, my grandfather was a teacher, and school was the best part of my day when I was a child. I was educationally "Gifted", and always excelled in school. Playing "school" was one of my very favorite pastimes, and I used to work my way through Spelling books for the sheer joy of it. I was also an insatiable reader and learned spelling through exposure. When I grew up, I became a teacher, and have taught K-5th grade students spelling for 25 years. I have a lot of advanced training in phonics and spelling patterns, and great curriculums for teaching spelling to kids. I can recommend educational software for spelling practice, and can help students edit their writing. I personally spell competently at a post-graduate level. Don't put me in a spelling bee though!
First of all, I have been a straight A student my entire life, and by nature enjoy studying and test-taking. I teach children with learning disabilities, so I have learned many strategies that help them become successful students. I teach children with memory problems either how to memorize, or strategies for getting around it. I test test-taking skills, organization, note-taking, and memorization methods.
I read extensively up until I had 3 children, so I just picked up on vocabulary quite naturally. I also had a terrific high school English Literature teacher who really stretched my reading and writing vocabulary. As a child, when I came to a word I didn't understand, I would actually look it up in a dictionary. The cap for my vocabulary training was studying for the SAT and GRE. My scores were in the top 1 percentile in Language Arts on both exams.
