The United Negro College Fund said it the best "The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste" (1972). Therefore with dedication and preparation you and I will work together to get your child where he/she needs to be academically. As a recent graduate from University of San Francisco with a Masters in Business and a Teaching Credential from Cal State Teach. I have had the opportunity to work with grades k-8th in both a private and public sector. Through my experience I have worked with students at different academic levels from English Language Learners, Students with Special needs and Gate students. Over the pass two years I have worked as a Para Professional, Substitute teacher and a Master teacher in my own classroom. With my experience and desire to inspire children to do well in school I know that I can help your child reach his/hers short term and long term academic goals.
My teaching strategy is simple: "learning is like a pyramid, all subjects build on each other". When a student is struggling I like to find out what they know already and build up from there. If you read consistently and pay attention to how the author wrote the material, then in time you can build your own writing skills. If you struggle with reading go back to phonemic and phonics basic awareness and see if their is a miss connection between sounds and blending sounds. If your child struggles with understanding material written in their text books then maybe their is a miss connect with comprehending grade appropriate text and your child needs to learn new strategies to help him/her decode the material and comprehend what they are reading. Furthermore, my teaching strategy is not to just help the student pass a test but to ensure that your child learns the appropriate strategies to tackle their weaker areas by themselves in the future. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The CBEST was one of the hardest tests I had to take to become a certified elementary teacher. Luckily, I had the assistance of Cal State Teach program that helped me with the state test. I know first hand that the test book is not enough to pass this test. It takes hours of studying, practicing, writing and a little memorization to pass the CBEST. I can provide a student with the necessary test taking best practices, study material and time management needed to pass this test the first time around.
I have experience working as a paraprofessional for grades k-5, was a student teacher, and was a master teacher for 8th grade as well as being a substitute teacher for elementary through high school.
Through my Cal State Teach program I was introduced to different teaching strategies to build phonemic awareness and phonics instructions. I learned that before a child is able to read him/her needs to gain an understanding of recognizing letter sounds and blending sounds together. Sound recognition, rimes, sight words and word walls are great learning strategies that can assist any child with developing the phonemic and phonics instruction.
