Hello! My name is Marieke and I am currently completing my graduate degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences at CSU Northridge. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics from CSUN and have several years of experience in tutoring and teaching children and adults of all ages. While at CSUN, I worked as a supplemental teacher for freshman writing classes as well as a tutor for foreign exchange students in the Intensive English Program. Additionally, I have taught reading skills and strategies to children from kindergarten to 12th grade and adults with the Institute of Reading Development. Most recently, I have worked as a tutor in the Santa Clarita Valley for elementary, junior high, and high school students and completed several clinics for my graduate degree that required knowledge of how to work with children with special needs.

My favorite part about working with students is inspiring in them a love of language and enjoyment of the particular subject we are working on. I encourage my students to ask difficult questions and participate in lively discussions about materials. We explore supplemental materials when the student needs additional support with comprehension of information until the student is able to independently understand and engage with the information. My greatest pleasure in tutoring students is the moment I realize the student is able to use the strategies I have taught them without my support.

My unique education path through English, Linguistics, and Communication Disorders has lent me a well rounded perspective on the best way to support students and encourage a love of learning. Furthermore, the many years I have spent as a student myself have made me an expert in organizational skills and strategies for homework completion that do not come naturally to many students. My students not only engage with materials but also learn invaluable organizational and time management skills.

On a practical level, being a desperate graduate student, I am one of the more flexible tutors you will find. I work with all manner of parent involvement and will prioritize parent and teacher concerns in my sessions. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions and schedule a lesson!

My Associates in English and Bachelors in Linguistics are really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my obsession and love of grammar in the English language and languages in general. As a supplemental instructor and tutor for college freshman English classes, I have experience mucking through grammatical and mechanical errors in student papers and helping students refine their papers into shiny masterpieces. No greater satisfaction!

Though I have never taught an elementary classroom at a public school, I have taught summer reading classes to children of all ages and classes of various sizes (4-20 students). I also have tutored elementary age students in reading, writing, spelling, and math, especially word problems. My experience as a paraeducator in special day classes and general education classes also gives me a unique perspective on the school system and how to support children in their course work. In addition to experience tutoring and teaching, specifically reading, to children from preschool to high school ages, I have also passed the CBEST test.

As someone homeschool from birth to high school graduation, I have intimate knowledge of the challenges, benefits, and resources available for homeschooling parents. Additionally, I have experience tutoring reading and writing for a homeschooled child and working with homeschool groups. My personal experience with homeschool and further education in reading and writing makes me a valuable reading/writing tutor for children being homeschooled.

The English language offers many challenges (beyond the bizarre spelling system) that yield rich rewards once the code has been cracked. As a student of English (Associates Degree) and Linguistics (Bachelors Degree), I have devoted a large part of my primary and secondary education to cracking this code. Now, as a tutor primarily of English, reading, and writing, I enjoy widening my students' appreciation and understanding of the English language.

Highly recommended tutor

Marieke did a wonderful job: she was always well prepared, in due time, flexible, creative and had a very good sense to work with our kids. We would like to thank her very much - all the best for your future.

Tom, 8 lessons with Marieke

She was great with my 3rd grader

She was able to quickly identify his problem areas and taught him tools that he can apply in the future. Look forward to having her tutor him again.

Whittnee, 17 lessons with Marieke

Helpful ESL class

She taught me with patience so I could easily understand. I studied and practice some idioms today and it was very fun.
