About Mariah

Hello! Welcome to my profile! I graduated cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in English. I worked as a tutor through the Office of Disability Services during my time at college. In successfully navigating my own academically rigorous journey as an ADD/LD student, I learned that traditional study practices are not for everyone. As a result of my own experience, I am able to adapt to the educational needs of individual students and suggest helpful strategies for academic organization and success. Additionally, my journey has empowered me to become an advocate for myself: a skill that I impart to my students, particularly those that learn uniquely and/or possess outside-the-box gifts.

My keen intuition and desire to understand the inner-workings of my students’ minds make me a sensitive and flexible mentor to people of all learning styles. Not every student benefits from linear mentorship or tutelage. No matter the cognitive or emotional barrier, I relentlessly help my students succeed, going the extra-mile to make material come alive for them. I feel that learning ignites at the intersection of the personal and the academic. Exploring this space, my students begin to grow in meaningful and lasting ways.

My areas of expertise are English and writing, and I find nothing more exciting than watching my students fall in love with the art of self-expression through the written word. With patience, love, and persistence I have been able to help some of the most self-doubting, anxious writers truly come out of their shells and master the art of writing with significance and individuality. I have helped students write essays on subjects ranging from current scientific events to historical debates to English literary analysis.

I also prep students for various standardized tests, including all English-related portions of the ISEE, ACT, and SAT, and also serve as a mentor in the private school and college application process. I have led courses on the process of applying to college and private schools with great success. My focus has been helping students craft lists of schools that resonate with them on all levels, and working tirelessly to help my college-hopefuls create poignant applications built on authenticity. This process has been tremendously effective. I have guided students in the application process from the levels of middle school to graduate school, and am equally inspired by all endeavors.

While I maintain a 12-hour cancellation policy, I am happy to offer makeup sessions at no additional charge within the same week of the originally scheduled session. I have found in my time as a tutor that a two-hour session is significantly more effective than a one-hour session, and as a result, strongly recommend that sessions be scheduled as such. Trust me, you will see the dramatic difference this makes! If you live outside my travel radius and are still interested in working with me, I am happy to discuss my policy regarding a fair transit fee. What is most important to me is providing you with the guidance you need, and I am very willing to make our working together possible!

Please feel free to reach out to me with any additional questions. I am so thrilled to begin working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In successfully navigating my own academically rigorous journey as an ADD/LD student, I learned that traditional study practices are not for everyone and developed many strategies that have proven beneficial to my students with various educational and cognitive needs. I worked as a tutor through the Office of Disability Services during my time at Barnard College, Columbia University and assisted ADD/ADHD students in a variety of academic disciplines. I currently work with an LA-based tutoring company with students that have attentional and various other LDs (Aspergers, visual memory and processing disorders, etc.) that impact the way in which they approach and perform in academic work. I have spoken on various panels about my own personal LD experience as well as my experience with educating alternative learners.
