About Benjamin

Hi, my name is Benjamin, and I teach music lessons. Guitar is my specialty, and I have taught a wide variety of styles to students of all ages for the past five years. This spring, I will graduate from the California Institute of the Arts with a Performer/Composer BFA and a Music Theory Minor. For the first two years, I was in the Guitar Performance program, and learned a variety of styles on electric and classical guitar. I have taught many students exactly what they want, and craft my lesson plan to achieve their own goals.
I currently have students in the Santa Clarita area, and teach Downtown on Fridays at Plaza de La Raza. This summer, I will move into Los Angeles, and be available for lessons in that area. I am prepared to drive a reasonable distance to satisfy the needs of my students. Teaching is my passion, and I promise that lessons with me will result in musical, and personal growth.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. To receive this degree, I have taken hour long composition lessons each week, taken extensive music theory and composition courses including Counterpoint, and studied in Berlin at UDK as a Composition student in the summer of 2014. I have written numerous compositions for various instruments. In Germany, I gave composition lessons in exchange for German lessons, and gave the student the tools he needed to further his songwriting abilities.

Ear Training

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. As a part of the requirements to graduate, I underwent 4 levels of ear training, and developed my ears to have a heightened sensitivity and specificity to the music I hear. I have tutored students in the past on this highly personal skill, and am able to discover their own ways of hearing to use it to their advantage. I finished my requirements early, and sat in on the advanced classes to continue my studies. Playing music with others in Jazz and other improvised contexts has heightened my abilities, and given an opportunity to apply my skills.

General Music

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. My school requires a broad education of music. This means my music history, theory, and skills as a performer are well informed. I am prepared to enter any discussion a student may desire. The world of music is as expansive as the world itself, and I am comfortable in addressing any facet of it.

Guitar

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. My first two years were in guitar performance, and I continued to receive extensive training on the instrument in my second two years. I entered as an electric rock guitarist, developed my skills as a jazz musician, and am currently performing on classical guitar. My repertoire ranges across the musical spectrum, and I have five years experience in teaching all levels of ability on the guitar. Students are consistently satisfied with my ability to address their specific needs. Currently, I teach at a local arts center in downtown LA.

Music History

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. This degree requires several classes in music history. I have taken a History of Western Music class, a Music of the 20th and 21st century class, and World Music Survey. History not only in the western tradition, but in traditions around the world are taught at CalArts. I have done my own research into the subject in Jazz, Brazilian Music, Rock, Metal, Blues, Folk, Indian, Balinese, African, and countless other traditions.

Music Production

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. Courses in Acoustics and Sound Production are required, but I have gone beyond that. I took a Digital Recording Studio class, gained access to the recording studio at the school, and recorded/mastered a handful of albums. I have been taught how to record Classical, Jazz, Rock, and other ensembles and applied my learning to record a rock group, a guitar/drum duo, and a jazzy guitar/voice duo.

Sight Singing

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. As a part of the requirements to graduate, I underwent 4 levels of musicianship skills. Each level required an ability sight sing increasingly difficult material. From tonal melodies, to the atonal "Modus Novus" textbook, I have been able to handle a variety of material. Though this is a highly personal skill, I have been able to pass it on to others, and find their individual way with handling notes on a page.

Songwriting

I will receive my BFA diploma as a Performer/Composer with a music theory minor this May. I took a Songwriting class, an Arranging class, and received composition lessons to refine my abilities to create songs. My classical guitar/soprano duo called Koimé has given me the opportunity to perform Jazz and Classical songs, make arrangements of this repertoire of my own, and write my own original pieces. I have been able to encourage my students to develop their own songwriting abilities, and give critiques of the pieces they bring into lessons.

Plans lessons well — Benjamin's lessons on the guitar are very well planned out. He adds a little bit of everything from chords to scales and some theory as well. To keep the lesson interesting there is a song to learn each week. He is very well versed in music and can write a lesson out from scratch. Highly recommended! ...
