Loyola University Chicago - Biology (Master's)
I have thought and tutored Biology at both the college and university level for 4 years, but I am also available to tutor high school students. The subjects I prefer to tutor, or specialize in include: Environmental Science courses, Ecology, Stream Ecology, General Biology, Biostatistics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Ornithology, and advanced Developmental Biology.
My approach to tutoring is very simple. I first ask you probing questions to see where the problem lies, because this allows me to tap into the area that needs more explanation, and then I take a fundamental approach to explain the material in detail. From my experience, its not that students do not understand the material most of the time, its just that they cannot comprehend how it fits into an entire month of lecturing for example.
Therefore, since I take a detail oriented, holistic approach, I make sure that you connect disparate concepts, and put them together into meaningful information that is accessible to you. Often, my students find themselves entertained with their own insightful scientific questions. As such, unlocking your potential is my key goal.
I love tutoring/teaching because it is my passion, and my drive. It is always a joy to see young minds mature with knowledge. I have thought and tutored well over 400+ students in academia from all different races and backgrounds, and all my students have excelled in their course work and are very satisfied with their grade at the end of the semester. However, for me to do a great job, I prefer one-on-one tutoring because it makes me attentive to your needs, and to allows me to deliver the material concisely and efficiently. I am always flexible if need be, because your learning is my priority, and very important to me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took biostatistics as an undergraduate, and I took advanced biostatistics and experimental design during my graduate studies. I got an A- in both classes.
