Experience: I have been tutoring and teaching for about fifteen years. I started as a national Speech and Debate competitor and coach in high school. While at UC Davis, I was both an English tutor for low income schools in Sacramento and a program leader for the UC Davis Ecological Garden. Shortly after graduating, I began working as a substitute and after school teacher for Vacaville Christian Schools. I subbed for all subjects, especially English, and taught Speech, Debate, and Robotics at the elementary level. I recently completed two years as a foreign language teacher for a private college in China.
Methods: I have taught a wide range of students, from kindergarten to adults, of various comprehension levels. When teaching, I look to tailor the material to the student's specific learning style and provide a fun, relaxed environment in which to learn. I am not a "one size fits all" kind of teacher. While I often use my own lesson plans and materials, I am also able to adapt to different curriculum to make it easier to absorb. I believe, we all have the capacity to learn and there is nothing that can't eventually be explained.
I feel you: My use of empathy when I teach is what makes me an effective teacher/tutor. As a foreign language learner myself, I know the frustration of trying to grasp another language. I utilize the same concern when instructing in English, Public Speaking, and Writing for exams.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a high school Speech and Debate competitor and coach for 6 years in a private, national league called the National Christian Forensic Communications Association (NCFCA). Additionally, I was a National Qualifier and Finalist four years in a row, as well as a Champion in Oral Interpretation. During college I was a finalist at the Phi Rho Pi National Championships in 2009. I have since worked as a speech coach and tutor for many institutions, including Vacaville Christian Schools.
