About Jonathan

Hi...my name is John.

I am a wordsmith as well as a lover of learning, in general! I also like to share my knowledge and help lead others to the point of mastering concepts in various subjects by providing intriguing, challenging, yet doable homework. I assess students' mastery of concepts using both formative (such as the use of dry-erase boards and exit tickets) and summative assessments regularly so that I can gauge how much and what they've learned within a given time frame.

I have been married to my lovely wife for almost 25 years. We have three children in different stages of life, and each is quite different from the others. I believe learning starts in the home and at an early developmental period of a person's life. My belief is that reading and clear, solid communication skills are of utmost importance in order to succeed in the later years of childhood and adulthood and therefore should be encouraged and supported as best as possible by parents and/or caregivers. Intense and consistent intervention is invaluable when a young person has gaps in his/her education, and I believe that informed motivation can help the student overcome what may have been missed or lacking in his/her earlier education path.

My policy for missed tutoring sessions is as follows: There will be a make-up session if the tutored student wishes; however, there is an automatic $20 penalty for a missed session unless I am notified at least 12 hours in advance of the session.

I have taught reading, writing, psychology, chemistry, earth science and math--from the most basic to college algebra and geometry--for 20+ years as a high school and community college teacher in three different states (i.e., California, Washington and Michigan) using a variety of hands-on approaches, incorporating the latest technology and the student's interests and culture when possible. Also, I have been a professional tutor in Southern California for 5+ years, working for seven different tutoring companies from Los Angeles to Simi Valley.

I am passionate about tutoring, and I look forward to meeting you and tutoring you should I get the privilege! Thank you for choosing me as your tutor. I promise to devote myself wholly to your learning so that you will both master the subject matter and become passionate, yourself, about the learning of it.

Cheers!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have taught learning disabled special education high school students, many of whom diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, in three different states--Washington, Michigan and California--for 19+ years, so my experience teaching this population is solid at the high school level. Furthermore, I have earned a Master's Degree in Special Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills, with an emphasis on learning disabilities. Finally, I have tutored students--ages 10-adult--with both ADD and ADHD, off and on, for over three years in Southern California.

I’m highly qualified to teach high school math, having taught college algebra, algebra I/II, geometry, pre-algebra and statistics and probability (embedded in math courses) over the past 20+ years at the high school and community college levels in Michigan, Washington state and California. Prealgebra

I’m highly qualified to teach pre-algebra, having taught this subject at a parochial middle/high school in Saginaw, Michigan for four years. I also taught resource students pre-algebra for one year at an alternative high school in Port Huron, Michigan. Finally, I’ve also tutored students with various kinds of math, working for six different professional tutoring companies in Southern California, preparing them to take standardized exams such as the SAT, PSAT and GED, and assisting them with their math in their middle school and high school classes.

Proofreading

I have taken and passed the RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) and am a highly qualified teacher in the areas of reading and writing according to federal standards.

Public Speaking

I've lectured on psychology, consisting of communication components, for 10 years at the community college level in both Michigan and Northern California. I've also taught ELA, including sections on communication and speech, for 15+ years in Michigan, Washington (state) and Southern California. Finally, I've participated in Quiz Bowl (Academic Decathalon) tournaments as a reader for over five years in Michigan.

Reading

I've taught--with a state license-- ELA (English Language Arts) for over 15 years in three different states (i.e., California, Michigan and Washington). I also taken and passed the RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment) and am a highly qualified teacher in the areas of reading and writing according to federal standards.
