Hello, My name is Stephani. I have been an elementary school teacher for twelve years. I have taught all grades from kindergarten to third grade, with the majority of the time spent in second grade. I have a clear understanding of each grade level's State Standards. I am currently teaching first grade and I love making a difference in the lives of children. Between 60-75 percent of my students each year scored in the advanced to proficient range on the STAR test in both English Language Arts and Math when I taught second and third grade. In first grade, I had of my 26 students, 16 of them reading chapter books like Junie B. Jones, The Magic Tree House and Horrible Harry. Within the remaining 10 students 6 finished the year reading at grade level by our district's standards and three finished the year reading at mid to late first grade level. One was retained. I am very confident in my ability to determine a student's level, needs and make an instructional plan to move them forward. I enjoy working with children, I love what I do and that is the sole motivator for taking on children who need additional help in school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Working in today's elementary school classroom teachers are required, as I am, to make specific modifications for children with ADD or ADHD. Currently I have 6-8 children in my class who have either been diagnosed with some sort of learning disorder (auditory processing disorder, ADD and ADHD). Lesson modifications, visual cues, consistent routines and seating accommodations are just a few of the strategies I employ when working with these students.
I am an Elementary School teacher who has Dyslexia. I was diagnosed when I was six years old. I have a unique understanding of how it can appear. Dyslexia has many forms, and can present struggles at some times worse than others. I, myself, as a child reversed letters, was unable to write them correctly and had to use wooden blocks to help learn muscle memory with respect to correct letter formation. In reading aloud, to this day, I struggle with word order in a text. I have firsthand knowledge in teaching reading to students with dyslexia and have employed reading techniques that enable the reader to only see the line they are reading while reading a passage.
