I'm a former engineer and devoted political science analyst who became a tutor because I know the challenges college students face. I believe in tailoring my style to work with you in providing the help you need to succeed, and I can tell you this: You can pass that class or get that paper done! I have a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and an M.A. in National Security Studies from CSU San Bernardino. I enjoy tutoring because I like connecting with students one-on-one or in small groups, watching the wheels in their head turn, and then seeing them turn around and succeed.
I have tutored several undergraduate subjects - algebra, physics and chemistry - but I specialize in graduate level writing. I believe in fitting my style into your educational plans, so my lessons naturally tend to be specific to you. Whether it is focused unit-specific science lessons, test prep, group review, or argument composition and thesis editing, I work to ensure the student brings forth their absolute best. I ensure continuity in learning for longer-term students by structuring lesson pacing and review, using simple techniques to maintain your momentum.
My experience as an engineer has given me intimate familiarity with college algebra and basic statistics. As these were learned in the context of engineering problems, my lessons focus on correct application of theory. As math is something where higher levels require a firm foundation, I structure lessons with an eye to applying basic principles in future classes.
As a lifelong nerd, physics and chemistry are something near and dear to my heart, and something in which I excelled at Cal Poly Pomona. I work to put lessons in a "real-world" context to make the material more accessible. I teach up through California general education requirements.
My M.A. in National Security Studies trained me as a political analyst - I learned to construct an argument with clarity and brevity to explain complex behaviors to policymakers. As part of this, intensive classes in expository writing were required. I became the class's go-to editor, as my writings were of publishable quality, and for my skills in thesis construction and argument analysis. I specialize in political writing and policy analysis.
I'm dedicated, enthusiastic, and I'll work around your schedule - the perfect go-to for the end of the term! Contact me soon, before all the slots are taken! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a former engineer, I have an extensive knowledge of the geometry, algebra and trigonometry required of the student on the ACT Math section. I believe in targeting lessons to the specific needs of the student, individualizing attention to ensure both a high score and rapid progress. I have found that many students are nervous when preparing for the ACT - don't be! I have found that through diligent preparation and focusing on the fundamentals, even the most worried of students typically exceed their own expectations. By being approachable, flexible and encouraging, I assist students to ignore their own nervousness and believe in themselves.
As a former engineer, I have a strong knowledge of the thinking required to identify a problem, seek data, and draw relevant conclusions that are both logical and critical. My techniques individualize attention on the student, and seek to instill certain "habits of thinking" that are effective in aiding the student to perform well on the ACT. I find that by being flexible, approachable, and encouraging, students are enabled to do their best.
I have an MA in National Security Studies, a writing/analysis-focused program from CSUSB.
